HDFX-4K turns flakey

Post by NatHillIV »

I have an HDFX-4K that has suddenly starting acting up.
HDHR config bombs out and says "ERROR:communication error"
I made sure everything was up to date, but it is still not right.
I am not smart enough to include a picture, but here's what I do know......
Hardware Model HDFX-4K
Firmware VErsion: 20260326
ATSC3-DRM SD20230420
Device ID 10ABA65B
MAC Address 00:18:DD:0A:BA:6B
IP Address 192.168.1.170 (static)
Subnet Mask 255.255.0
I checked the box Send diagnostic information.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do. It had worked perfectly as far as I know until tonight. Since 3 out of the 4 Indianapolis stations have DRM, I haven't used the SiliconDust tuner as much as I used to. Tonights FIFA game was on FOX, and it does NOT feature DRM. I hate another ATSC 3.0 that isn't anywhere as good as yours, but it can "sort of" handle DRM, so it's the tuner I am currently forced to use most often. Unfortunately.

We would like to get some diagnostic data:
  1. Please go to http://hdhomerun.local
  2. If it tells you that a firmware update is available, please install it
  3. Click System Status
  4. Check the Send diagnostic information box
  5. Go back one page
  6. Click Channel Lineup
  7. Click on Detect Channels
  8. After the scan finishes, open the HDHomeRun app
  9. Go into the app settings: the gear icon in the top right corner of the "Live/Recorded/Discover/Tasks" page
  10. Enable the option to "Send diagnostic information"
  11. Watch a problem channel for at least 10 minutes

Reply back to this post and we will check the logs

I'm afraid it's a goner. MAKE THAT WAS AFRAID!
Last night, it started by not receiving VHF channels. IT worked on UHF for a while. Now in HDHomeRun or HDCONFIG it can't find a single channel. I tried your suggestions, but I can'tbegin to complete them.
I certainly appreciate your offer, but it's beyond the capabilities of me (or my tuner) to begin to comply with your request.
Since I only receive only ONE ATSC 3.0 signal the HDHomeRun can use, I will simply replace my 4K unit with an old

HOLD THE PRESSES. For whatever reason, I went back to the tuner and rescanned the channels through HDHRCONFIG.
Now it works just fine. Even the one DRM encrypted ATSC3.0 Channel is showing me a perfect picture and sound of the FIFA world cup.
I GIVE UP. Electronics are going to be the death of me.

But all is well that ends well! THANK YOU

Well, it flaked out again. Worked for about an hour, then started acting weird. Then it finally quit and started all the weird errors again. I've done some checking online, and I am guessing it's all related to heat. I think I will try a few things I have read about. Put it on its side, provide a computer fan to (hopefully) settle it down. It is simply amazing when it is working. I hope that will solve my problems. If not, I will let you guys know. I'm a little surprised I didn't think of heat as a problem before.

Re: HDFX-4K turns flakey - update

Post by NatHillIV »

Here's a report from this morning
Here are the steps you requested, and my progress.

We would like to get some diagnostic data:

Please go to http://hdhomerun.local
If it tells you that a firmware update is available, please install it
Click System Status (Menu)
Check the Send diagnostic information box
Go back one page
Click Channel Lineup
Click on Detect Channels
This is where things got weird. It got about half way through detecting checking, stopped, then reported the channels present on another device. Not sure what to make of that. Crazy part? I then successfully did the next steps.
After the scan finishes, open the HDHomeRun app
Go into the app settings: the gear icon in the top right corner of the "Live/Recorded/Discover/Tasks" page
Enable the option to "Send diagnostic information"
Watch a problem channel for at least 10 minutes
The HDFX-4K is now successfully working on the HDHomeRun app (with both send diagnostic informations turned ON) showing channel 159.1 (ATSC 3.0 with no DRM). It will probably work for a while. It usually does. Generally craps out in about an hour.
It started about 10 minute ago.

Let me know what we should do next. I'm sure there is something wrong, and would bet on heat being the culprit. Even though it doesn't seem all that hot to me.

Can you double check the device ID? The one you mentioned before doesn't seem to be valid.

Model: HDFX-4K
Device ID: 10ABA6B5
Firmware: 20260326

Above cut and pasted from the device.

NOT 10ABA65B - blasted dyslexia

My bad. Sorry!

Thanks for the reply. I'm almost certain the device is faulty. It just keeps doing almost exactly the same sequence of events. Starts out just fine, then about an hour later, craps out with the eventual report of 'communication error." After shifting to reporting on another HomeRun device.

The logs indicate that the HDHomeRun is repeatedly losing power and rebooting. Are you using the power supply that came with that device and not something that came with a different device or some other power source?

Is there anything connected to the USB port on the HDHomeRun?

I'm about 99% sure you have hit the nail on the proverbial head.
The tuner does NOT currently have the right power source. I would note, as a VERY weak form of defense that the tuner itself says it requires a 12V 1amp power supply. Best excuse I can come up with on short notice! :D

I just ordered the proper power supply from you. I'm betting $15 it will solve my problem!

I appreciate your time fixing my bonehead mistake!
