With this move, the FCC has created a path for local ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC stations to shut down their current free over-the-air (OTA) TV signals and switch to the new ATSC 3.0 standard. This will force millions of Americans to buy a new ATSC 3.0 converter to continue receiving television.

I think this source has become questionable..DaveNLR wrote: Mon Sep 08, 2025 5:32 am https://cordcuttersnews.com/the-fcc-wil ... -3-0-only/

Re: Switch to turn off ATSC 1 beginning
Nothing has changed on that front... the same rules have been there for many years including still needing to provide 95% coverage via regular atsc which is the exact opposite of the headline.
To me the only thing it made more clear is that only the major channel must still be simulcast as with the lighthouse situation typically all sub channels would be carried by/split between others for hosting the other's major via atsc3. This also is the opposite of the headline as the networks mentioned would most likely be the major channel still required to be simulcast.
Now if the headline read you may lose channels like cozi, dabl and h&i, it would be more accurate.

This article is full of it. No new information regarding ATSC 1.0 being sunset has come out. The FCC did re-post some old data, and CCN drew some incorrect conclusions from that.DaveNLR wrote: Mon Sep 08, 2025 5:32 am With this move, the FCC has created a path for local ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC stations to shut down their current free over-the-air (OTA) TV signals and switch to the new ATSC 3.0 standard. I remember back in the day, like most everyone here, getting a couple of $40 coupons to buy a couple of Zenith converter boxes which had a very sensitive tuner. I still have both boxes too. LOL.
In today's money, the FCC should now give up a $200 coupon for a STB.

Re: Switch to turn off ATSC 1 beginning
Such converter boxes have been proposed (by NAB?) to enable a transition to move quickly (I presume these days, rather than ATSC 1.0 in, NTSC out, it would be ATSC 3.0 in, HDMI out). However, since any transition has no fixed completion date (unlike the ATSC 1.0 deadline), and (perhaps most importantly) no congressional funding, it is not going to happen until/unless there is some congressional action.AlbumMan wrote: Mon Sep 08, 2025 4:49 pm I remember back in the day, like most everyone here, getting a couple of $40 coupons to buy a couple of Zenith converter boxes which had a very sensitive tuner. I did not know it had been proposed but as we all know that will never happen. Thanks.gtb wrote: Tue Sep 09, 2025 9:14 amSuch converter boxes have been proposed (by NAB?) to enable a transition to move quickly (I presume these days, rather than ATSC 1.0 in, NTSC out, it would be ATSC 3.0 in, HDMI out).
