Nothing has changed on that front... the same rules have been there for many years including still needing to provide 95% coverage via regular atsc which is the exact opposite of the headline.

To me the only thing it made more clear is that only the major channel must still be simulcast as with the lighthouse situation typically all sub channels would be carried by/split between others for hosting the other's major via atsc3. This also is the opposite of the headline as the networks mentioned would most likely be the major channel still required to be simulcast.

Now if the headline read you may lose channels like cozi, dabl and h&i, it would be more accurate.

This article is full of it. No new information regarding ATSC 1.0 being sunset has come out. The FCC did re-post some old data, and CCN drew some incorrect conclusions from that.

I remember back in the day, like most everyone here, getting a couple of $40 coupons to buy a couple of Zenith converter boxes which had a very sensitive tuner. I still have both boxes too. LOL.
In today's money, the FCC should now give up a $200 coupon for a STB.

Such converter boxes have been proposed (by NAB?) to enable a transition to move quickly (I presume these days, rather than ATSC 1.0 in, NTSC out, it would be ATSC 3.0 in, HDMI out). However, since any transition has no fixed completion date (unlike the ATSC 1.0 deadline), and (perhaps most importantly) no congressional funding, it is not going to happen until/unless there is some congressional action.

What will happen to the substations that are ATSC 1.0 only like MeTV and Cozi? I watch these more than all the major OTA channels. I am afraid they will die.

as with everything else in atsc 1.0 those sub-channels will be carried in atsc 3.0 the station engineers will have to build out the physical layer pipes to support them.

All virtual channels can be delivered on a single PLP.

DVB-T2 supports multiple PLPs as well but broadcasts in most DVB-T2 countries use a single PLP for everything.

One of the reasons some broadcasters want a forced move to ATSC 3.0 is that more channels converting will eliminate the capacity crunch and allow them to move over the multicast networks like MeTV and Cozi. In theory, the improved efficiency of HEVC could allow them to upgrade some of them from 480i to 480p or 720p to improve the quality as well.
