Recordings for a single channel of low quality

Post by pearly »

I'm not sure where to start with troubleshooting this issue - whether it might be hardware or software or what to do.

I am seeing artefacts in the picture quality on a single channel that I am recording - everything looks and sounds perfect for most channels / recordings, but for one channel, all the recordings have glitches / artefacts in the picture, making it unwatchable.

My setup is HD Homerun Connect Quatro connected to Plex running on a Synology DS923+ and everything (Synology, Plex) is on the latest software version, though I am actually not sure how to update the HomeRun itself to latest. I am using IceTV for my TV guide, and I am in Australia, where most channels are working but channel 10 has the issue. This channel previously recorded fine (I've been using this same set up for over a year) but recently (a month or so ago) the problem started and it hasn't gone away.

Any tips for where I should start / what I should do would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

The first thing would be to try live TV on the same channel in the HDHomeRun app, ideally on a couple different kinds of device, and see if the same problem happens. Second, check some of the other channels that are carried on the 10 broadcast (10s in the capitals, 50s in regional Australia) like Peach and Bold.

Thanks.

I didn’t realise that you could use the HDHomeRun app so I have just downloaded it and used it to update the firmware which is a good start.

Watching all 3 live channel 10 channels through that app worked fine. Also, watching channel 10HD (which is the channel that glitches on recording) live through Plex works fine. It’s only the recording that glitches. Interestingly, watching 10Bold live works fine too, but if I try to watch 10Peach live (via Plex) it says “something went wrong playing your media. Please try again. Could not direct play because: App cannot direct play this item. Direct play is disabled. Could not transcode because: Not enough CPU for conversion of this item.” - it consistently gives this error and will not play 10Peach. Most other channels are fine with live playback but not 22 or 23, 44, 72, 93, 94, 96 - none of these will play live and all give the same error.

Not sure what to try next. Further help much appreciated.

Okay I just googled the error I get on live play, and found a Plex setting called “allow direct play”, which was off. Turned it on and now the live tv on all channels, plus those recordings all work fine.

Yay.

I’m glad I got that firmware updated too.
