Watching NFL

Post by Firewall »

So I am very new to HDHR but really like all of the features and it works very well. The one strange thing that happens every weekend is I lose reception on some networks carrying NFL games. For instance my local FOX station is unwatchable today for NFL games. During the week I have no issues either on their ATSC 1.0 channel or their 3.0 channel. Today neither one will hold the signal. I use a Televes Elipse outdoor antenna and normally FOX will have these readings Signal=100% Signal Quality=70% and Symbol Quality=100%. Today theses readings drop significantly on the Fox channel the readings are 100%, 47% and 0%. My internet speed is roughly 1 gig down and 35m up.

Does anybody else have this issue? Is there something that I should be doing?

Thanks,

Jack

Whenever you have signal strength of 100% you may be overpowering the tuner as you don't know how much above 100% it is and too much can also affect quality on any other channel as it overloads the internal amplifier. One thing causing issues is LTE interference so make sure you have a proper LTE filter in place (preferably on the antenna, which I believe you may have one built in but some built in ones only go down to 700MHz rather than 608 depending on when and where purchased... I have seen improved results if LTE filter is also on the device itself but each situation is a bit different and whether or not it is easy enough to check each cable/fitting). You might try an attenuator on the device... if you drop it by 7-10dB and you are still at 100% strength I would strongly suspect you have too strong of a signal.

Thank you signcarver. The antenna is brand new so there is no attenuation at the base, not sure about the antenna itself. I tried unplugging the amp and that sometimes helps the ATSC 3.0 channel but not enough to hold the channel. Watching now (dark outside) and the channel is holding with no issues. Do you think more height would help overall reception? Apparently the HDHR device is working as expected so no issue there! Thank you for your comments, appreciate the help!

I have noticed when the NFL is on CBS or NBC. The signal quality drops.
My guess is it is being done on purpose, so you will be forced to use their paid app.
(Peacock and Paramount).

The Hartford stations have spotty coverage in your area due to the line of hills to the north of you blocking direct line of sight to the broadcast towers. The signal you get is likely diffracting off the edge of the hill and bending down to you, and this greatly weakens the signal and also can kind of scramble it around a bit. The Ellipse is probably a bit underpowered for that kind of reception. You might consider the DAT BOSS MIX LR instead, as the extra elements will help pull in more signal and reject potential multipath that can lower the signal quality.

Yes, I have been thinking about the DAT BOSS LR. I did adjust the Ellipse upwards and that has substantially helped. Waiting to see what weather conditions interact with this new setup. I will say the Ellipse is very directional, a degree of move can be the difference between signal and no signal! Thanks for your comments especially as they relate to my location!
