New channels in the 100 range

Post by boscom »

Hi, I noticed many new channels added that are in the 100 range. I used to only have channels up to 66, but now I see 102 up to 166. The problem is that there is nothing displayed on the channels in the 100 range, just a black screen. They do look like duplicates of other channels I already have. Does anyone know why I'm seeing these new channels and why I can't view them?

SiliconDust's ATSC 3.0 tuners list equivalents of ATSC 1.0 channels with the ATSC 1.0's virtual channel numbers plus 100. So 102 and 166 are probably ATSC 3.0 channels 2 and 66. If you can't see them they're probably DRM encoded, which SD's tuners aren't allowed to show (yet).

I believe the only markets that have 2 and 66 in ATSC 3.0 are Boston and Chicago, because there just aren't a lot of 66s in general. Both have significant potential reception issues. Boston's 3.0 broadcast is way out in the suburbs near Marlborough and operating at lower power than most of the major networks, and Chicago's is on VHF when all the major networks are on UHF. It would not be unexpected for someone using a basic indoor antenna to have enough signal to detect that the 3.0 channels exist but not enough to actually receive them.
