Can't find or hide some channels that are being found

Post by terpfan1980 »

When I scan for channels, I'm not seeing some channels that the HDHomeRun Flex is apparently finding in my area (enough so that Jellyfin has those channels coming through). In one case I want the channels that are being found (low power station from nearby area that I'm glad to be receiving). In another case, the channels that are being found are from an area that would considered pretty distant to my area, from another market that I have much less interest in. While there's one sub-station there that I'd be interested in, the rest would be duplicates of stuff that I already get from the two local markets for me.

None of these stations are showing up in the detected channels list so I can't favorite them, or X them out from my channels.

Is there some way to work around this?

They have to first be found for you to do that with the modern method of tuning and any app that uses that list. The device itself does keep its own channel list. Other software may allow more manual control but many these days are 100% reliant on the scan. When you (manually) rescan on the device, it will drop things it doesn't detect at that time. Every few days it will do an autoscan which will add any new channels it discovers but it will not drop channels previously discovered (at least from the manual scan).

The only work around is to improve/adjust your antenna setup to properly pull in the things you want. Or you may choose to use software that isn't dependent on the scan results and maintains the lineup in it's own settings. Keep in mind that often the issue of not finding "local" channels is that the signal is too high so if you are seeing these "distant" stations but not seeing the local ones you expect, you are probably over amplifying.

I think I figured out what had happened. I think I had selected these additional channels from another guide listing (for a neighboring area) and had them, at least temporarily, included in the guide data. From there Jellyfin left the channel in the list of channels but without any guide data as it couldn't actually find the channel from the tuner (via the HDHomerun)

Either way, thankfully, the extra channels are gone now as I had wanted. All good from there.

Other points re: tuning the antenna, repointing it, etc., all valid, just not really applicable for what had happened for me.

That said, I wouldn't mind at all a feature update that gave me the ability to lock out stations that weren't discovered, just to make sure they won't even try to be pulled in. I doubt it would be used often, just saying it would be nice to have it as an option.
