HDHomerun and Cloudflare

Post by vmstek »

So, with the recent Cloudflare outage I saw the HdHomerun tuner would not load.
How is it that a device designed for a non-internet service requires an active internet connection to function?
It seems counterintuitive to the OTA tuner concept to lose OTA service because Cloudflare is down.

The UI for the app on platforms other than Apple TV and Roku is loaded dynamically when the app is opened, and that runs through Cloudflare. All of the images related to the guide system do as well.

There is a long thread in our subreddit on this...

Short version...

The Roku app should have continued to work but didn't. Roku can handle a full internet outage but the partial outage of losing only CF caused a problem. We tracked it down and fixed the problem - the fix will be in the next Roku release.

The Apple TV app should have continued to work but didn't. We can now simulate a CF outage and we will have Apple TV updated soon.

Other platforms are further out. Also note that some platforms will not launch apps (at all) without internet, not related to our app.

and do note that the device itself does not require internet. Any media player that supports UPnP A/V or DLNA will pick up on the HDHomeRun's channels, such as VLC, even with no internet connection.

Good to know about the DLNA ...I did not think to check that or my Vero4k
I was using the app on a Sony Google display and Android mobile.
