Upgraded to Quatro Flex, need a bit of guidance with set up

Post by Finchy505 »

Hi all

I've had a problem with our TV aerial for quite a few months so have not been able to use the newer HDHR I upgraded to when my old one started playing up, but I've now got a new masthead amp and it's all working fine again.

I'm trying to set up my HDHR; previously I used my desktop (Windows) to store the recordings, but the Quatro Flex has a USB slot, so I've chucked in a 512GB USB drive. In my HDHR wizard I can still see that it says "store recordings on this PC" and the location set, but I can't see anywhere in there where it has details of the internal storage (ie the USB stick), but then when I go into the http://hdhomerun.local/dvr.html it only shows the 512GB USB drive, but no options to do anything with it.

How does it work with the USB drive? Can you only use one or the other? Should I be disabling the "store recordings on this PC" completely?

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

You can have as many record engines as you want... typically the one that records is the one with the most space. To actually record on the flex, you have to subscribe to the DVR service and you set such recording rule up through the HDHomeRun app which stores such rules in the cloud.

With the size drive mentioned, you may not find such as being ideal to work as a DVR engine but it depends on the type of storage.

Ah, ok, thank you. So I guess if I use the USB stick for recordings I won't be able to easily access them like when they're on my desktop hard drive? I don't record a lot to be honest, mostly have series links for daily news, Match of the Day and a few other shows so half a TB should be fine. I wasn't sure if a USB stick would be fast enough read/write for sole recording location though.

I also use Plex with it, that records to my desktop, just thought it might be useful to keep HDHr's own recordings local to that!

We do not recommend recording to a flash drive. They aren't designed for the kind of usage the DVR will put on them, and they tend to have performance issues over time.

Recordings can be transferred off a FLEX running as a DVR through the web page (although limited by the 100Mb/s connection in the HDHomeRun) or by connecting the drive to a Linux system, as it uses a standard Linux filesystem called XFS.

Ah, thanks, I hadn't realised that. Would a portable USB drive be ok (ie powered by the HDHr's USB) or does it need to be a powered USB drive?

I've been using a Western Digital Blue 1TB 2.5" SATA SSD connected by a USB to SATA adapter for almost 2 years now. No issues.
