Apple TV herk and jerk

Post by jxxaxxy »

Has anyone else noticed the app on Apple TV that it kinda herk and jerks like everything 6 or 7 seconds? I also have Channels DVR and this behavior doesn't happen and runs smooth while watching OTA tv.

Does it go smooth after 90 seconds of watching?

Actually yes it does. But of course if you change channels then your back to the same until x amount of time.

This is by design - it makes the channel change faster. The player is building up a buffer to prevent buffering issues due to wifi or the 59.94 vs 60Hz miss-match.

My Apple TV is connected by wire and is the 2022 model. 30 to 90 seconds seems like a long time to sort out the smooth play. I would think this would happen within the first 10 seconds for buffering. Jumping between football games and commercials would make me not want to use the app. I would gladly trade a second or two on switching channels to not have the hitching go on for that amount of time.

Thanks for the explanation.

Do other plays do this? I've never noticed it on macOS or Android TV.

Not sure. I have all of them in a box somewhere but since i moved to Apple TV, I just have no want to try the others again ;-)

We do this on most platforms - yes.

It usually isn't noticeable except on specific content where something is scrolling.

I will retest Apple TV tracking frame rendering timing...
