I don't really have a great answer for you besides considering a different antenna. The DB8e was designed for the UHF band as it existed 15 years ago, not as it exists today, and the performance below channel 26 or so is pretty subpar due to the combination of elements that are too small and a poorly designed feed system.

Rrrr it worked every day for years… knowing I will literally only use it for one channel (8.1), what should I choose?

Can you PM me your address? There's a pretty large difference in signal levels in the area you've described so I want to get a better idea of what should be seen.
