TCL TV w/HDHR app

Post by AlbumMan »

I decided to update my 16 year old LG TV today and bought a Google TCL 55QM5K. First thing I added was the HDHR app and immediately went to the non-encrypted ATSC3 channels. Right away the picture froze then a few seconds later the audio quit. Tuned to the FOX station (which must be using a different format) and the picture just strobed. I connected my $50 onn Google box back to HDMI1 and these stations play and look great. Just wondering if anyone has a TCL TV too and is the app working normally? Thanks.

Can you please enable "send diagnostic information" in the Settings menu of the HDHomeRun app on the TCL TV, reproduce the problem, then reply back with the Device ID of your HDHomeRun.

Device ID: 10AB6A18
Just enabled diags and tuned to channel 103.1 at 3:05pm CST.
This channel briefly displays HDR10 in the upper left corner but the picture, when it appears, is frozen. I let that run for a couple of minutes then switched to 133.1 (owned by a different station) and this one just strobes fast. Will let run a couple of minutes too.

Thank you.

The AC4 codec built into the TV looks like it may be broken. I have blacklisted the codec to test... can you please try channel 103.1 or 133.1 again.

I just noticed the app is detecting the video as 720p120 which is very odd.

Can you please do a 60s format=dbg capture by clicking this link so I can take a look...
http://hdhomerun.local:5004/auto/v145.1 ... uration=60

Once downloaded/save to a file please upload to a site such as Google Drive and PM me the share link.

Edit - fixed the link

BTW you have two ATSC 3.0 broadcasts, one carrying 133.1 + 145.1, and the other carrying 103.1 + 103.2 + 103.3 + 121.1.

133.1 and 145.1 are most likely not playing due to being 120fps.

When testing make sure you test channels from both broadcasts...

Thank you again Nickk. The funny thing is about 6 months ago I bought a smaller TCL 4k for the bedroom, had the same results but did not report it so I returned it the next day.

I tried the link you sent and Firefox blocked it but I allowed the d/l which ran way longer than 60secs and didn't appear to be doing anything so I cancelled it.

103.2 and 103.3 are obviously the subs which are just HEVC and they play fine.
We do have 2 other stations but they are encrypted so that's out.
133.1 and 145.1 are the ones that strobe.

And as mentioned previously, my external onn Google 4k box connected to the same TV plays them all perfectly.

I forgot the port number... link fixed.

That makes sense... the 133.1/145.1 broadcast is 120fps which is most likely a mistake. Impressive the Google 4K can play 120fps.

What are 103.1 and 121.1 doing?

I didn't elaborate in an earlier post.

103.1 briefly displays HDR10 in the upper left corner but the picture is frozen. The audio continues for a few seconds then stops. A few seconds later the video goes black and reappears frozen.
121.1 is owned by the same company and although the HDR 10 badge doesn't appear like 103.1, the picture is frozen too.

These play fine on the external Google 4k box.

Thanks again for your assistance Nick.

103.1 is 1080p60... no obvious errors.

I will run through our playback tests when the TV arrives tomorrow.
