Recording without Internet connection.
Recording without Internet connection.
One thing that can be a little frustrating is having to be connected to the Internet to access the app and make recordings (or so I thought.) My Internet modem failed overnight and after lots of fast driving in heavy rain this morning I returned with a new modem from Spectrum. After an activation all seems good. I was very surprised to find that all my morning news recordings were done and accessible when there was no Internet. I've been using the DVR for years and this really surprised me, though the app could not opened with no Internet. I even got up and attached a quick antenna to my TV in the middle of the night, so I would some sort of something to watch until I got the net working. How is this possible?
Re: Recording without Internet connection.
The DVR retrieves the upcoming recordings for the next 8 hours every 2 hours, so as long as the outage lasts less than somewhere between 6 and 8 hours (depending on the time of the last update relative to the outage), nothing will be missed.
Re: Recording without Internet connection.
Time frame is not conclusive, but what you are saying is that the DVR is capable of recording OTA signals even when the Internet is down? The problem is not being able to access them by way the HDH app without an Internet connection. Is this what you are pointing out?
Re: Recording without Internet connection.
Yes. The HDHomeRun itself does not need internet at all when used with third-party apps that don't utilize the guide data we provide. The DVR only needs enough internet to retrieve tasks every few hours, and the HDHomeRun enough to check in occasionally. The app (except on Roku) requires internet to open. We do have plans to support offline use of the app on other platforms, but it's a not a minor change because there are a lot of things behind the scenes that are designed to operate under the assumption that an internet connection is present.
