New HDhomerun tuner setup issue
New HDhomerun tuner setup issue
Hello - was trying to setup my new 4k Flex tuner today and it's getting a strange, outside the range, IP address. is there a reason it's doing this? Was something set internally at the factory by any chance? This isn't happening with any other device on my network. Thanks.
Re: New HDhomerun tuner setup issue
IPv4 - the HDHomeRun will pick up a DHCP address from your router, plus maintain an Auto-IP address (169.254.x.x). The Auto-IP address is harmless - just ignore it.
IPv6 - the HDHomeRun will pick a link-local address and a global address if your router supports IPv6.

Re: New HDhomerun tuner setup issue
So where do I find that IP address? I’m not seeing it in my router and when I go to the myhdhomerun page it gives that link local address.
I spent a bunch of time on this last night to try and get it working. From what I can tell the device appears to be requesting an IP address every minute. Router sends back an offer of 192.168.81.202, but the device does not accept it. Instead, the device has given itself a link-local address of 169.254.2.141, which is normal to choose a link-local address when nothing else is available.
I can’t find the DHCP address anywhere?

"when I go to the myhdhomerun page it gives that link local address" - can you please clarify what you mean by this.
It sounds like DHCP is failing... are you up for doing a Wireshark packet capture? (filter "bootp" to see the DHCP communication)
We haven't seen a DHCP problem since ~2010 when we discovered routers running WinCE couldn't handle a hostname longer than 16 characters.

Re: New HDhomerun tuner setup issue
Yes, the hdhomerun.local page gives me a 169.254 address, my range set by my router is 192.168.xxx
I had a connect from a presale, maybe it was kickstarter, 5-6 years ago? A couple days ago it did this exact thing, I could no longer see it on the router. I just figured it had kicked the bucket so I ordered a new one to give it a try. Nothing has changed about my setup, and this rabbit hole started Wednesday maybe?
Something weird, the firmware is 20240506...I wasn't aware there was a 2024 firmware.

Re: New HDhomerun tuner setup issue
Any chance your router got a firmware update that is causing problems?
The other possibility is you have a second DHCP server on your network... did you install any new APs or equipment?
I can help with the DHCP packet capture...
1) Download and install Wireshark on a PC on the same network: https://www.wireshark.org/
2) Start a capture on the Ethernet adapter of the PC.
3) Set the display filter (edit box near the top left of the screen) to "bootp" so you are only looking at DHCP traffic.
4) Unplug and replug the Ethernet cable to the HDHomeRun to force it to do DHCP right away.
5) Save the capture and exit.

Re: New HDhomerun tuner setup issue
I can try that.
Re: the router, there hasn't been an update in months so I don't think so.
Is there a way to reset the hdhomerun and try to get it to grab a new IP address? Is it just unplug it and plug it back in?
