Thank you. So Series Record would record the movie as many times as it would air?

An observation:

A western movie is coming on tomorrow and April 2. I selected each airing and hit record. (Not record series).

Only the one tomorrow shows up on the task list. The one for April 2 does not.

The task list goes to April 11th so the second recording of the movie should be listed in the tasks list. But it does not.

How then do I verify it is going to record the movie twice?

No, it will record the movie exactly once. Think of the movie as a series with one episode. The DVR is smart enough to know to record each episode exactly once.

Series Record - if the next airing of the movie can't record (for example you have more things scheduled to record than you have tuners) it will try recording it the next airing that comes up. Once recorded it won't record that same movie or episode again.

Specific airing - it will only record this specific airing (time+channel) and try to do so with a higher priority than everything else. It will still record this airing even if the DVR has an existing recording of this movie or episode.

Because they are specific airings both should be showing up in the Task list. You won't see it in upcoming recordings because April 2 is too far out to be displayed.

I can check... what is the Device ID of your HDHomeRun?

ID 104CC1B6

I believe the second airing should show up because my task list goes to April 11th. April 2 is less than a week or so.

Odd... I don't see DVR or any recording rules associated with your account.

Edit - I found your account by email address, but that device ID isn't associated with that device.

You are correct. That must have been my old Duo I had written down.

But my concern is still valid. Indeed. The new Interface showed the movie The Charge of the Feather River airing on 3-27-2025 at 6:00 am and on April 2.

In the old interface, both airings would show up under the Tasks list.

As I shared yesterday, only one despite my task list showing movies slated from then till April 11th.

Now I see it recorded the one at 6 am. But still now listed in Tasks for the second airing April 2.

AND, if I do a Discover search for the movie The Charge of the Feather River it comes up, but the right arrow only shows Series Record, Watch from Start, Delete, Delete Re-Record.

So I have no clue either in the Task list or as mention just now to know if it will record the movie a second time.

I am only left to assume I have to move it out of the DVR recording folder for that option to record the movie again will show up. Please clarify.

You can still record a movie that is already recorded.

Choosing the Record series / Auto record option will do nothing because it has already recorded.
Choosing any of the specific airings will make a new recording.

We have confirmed an issue with the handling of recording specific airings (it works but is confusing)... we will have an update out shortly to address this.

Thank you.

Maybe I am missing something or not clear.

When I go to my Tasks, "The Charge at Feather River" is not listed even though I choose it and it airs again (from my memory) April 2.

When I go to Discover, I can find it. I understand your point about "Series Record." Does not apply for re-recording a movie.

I understand "Watch from Start" to mean I can watch the movie from the beginning that I recorded already.

I see I can delete the recording from the right arrow. Got it.

I see a "Delete Re-Record" Does that mean it is set to record again??? IE April 2. The problem with the new interface is there is no way to tell "when" it is going to re-record as the future airing(s) is not listed if recorded once.

---If that is what you suggest will be fixed, I appreciate it.

Both Recorded and Discover should display the same episode view (one recording available to view). If you press Right it will show you the upcoming airing where you can choose to record it.

From what you are describing the movie shows as Coming Soon in Discover and shows as recorded in Recorded. This means the guide thinks these are different movies.

Like others, I have issues with this. HDHomeRun UI is not a streaming service. It is a DVR and a media repository.
For example, I record "Great Performances at the Met", for which I have a large number of recordings. Some are multiple recordings of the same opera with different casts.
I used to be able to sort by title and locate the two iterations of, say, Madama Butterfly. With the new interface, I would have to linearly search each season to find the matches.
One possible solution would be to add a "View All" entry on the left side of the program page, above the "Season 1", "Season 2", etc. entries. "View All" would show a complete list of the recordings with sortable columns. No images would be required. I know that you don't like spreadsheets, but this approach could work as a compromise.

Ok, I really am trying. Ok, I removed the copy of The Charge at Feather River out of my DVR NAS location. Completely gone. Guess what? Now under Discover The Charge at Feather River shows up 'coming soon.' AND right click shows it coming April 2 12:30 am Ch. 10.6.

THIS means it is the same movie, but the new Interface does not allow one to see an upcoming movie airing again IF it is already re-corded once.

I noticed this prior to the Interface being 'forced' upon us now. During the option to try it, it did the same thing.

Try this yourself. Find a movie that airs twice. Record the first airing, and then go and see if you can still see the future airing being listed or any option to record it again.

I think options for the old interface or new interface would be helpful. I am looking for an alternative program already as this new interface makes me use it differently without it being easier or better for me.

I am smart enough to sort by myself.

I think that would be a good idea too. But I don't think they're going to do it:

I also dislike this new interface. However, I do like that I have the option to get the guide data and manipulate or sort it however I like. This is documented here:
viewtopic.php?t=72813

I'll add some comments here, as you have to read through most of that thread before you can actually figure out what's necessary to successfully download the guide data. This also is not a complete solution[1], just the basics to get the guide data. You'll have to program whatever to parse it and put it into a format you like.

The first thing you have to do is get the DeviceAuth strings from your device(s). If you have more than one device, you have to get the DeviceAuth string from each and concatenate them together. Here's how to do this with curl and jq:

Code: Select all

curl -s http://IP-OF-YOUR-DEVICE/discover.json | jq -rM '.DeviceAuth'
Output will look something like this:

Code: Select all

26abQxocaMEnJTC2zv029AOp
NOTE: That is not a real working DeviceAuth string. Just an example of what it looks like. You will need to get this string every time you want to pull the guide data because this string changes. I think it changes every eight hours, but I'm not certain.

If you have more than one device you need to get the DeviceAuth from each and then concatenate them together.

Once you have your DeviceAuth string(s), you can now pull the guide data for your device(s):

Code: Select all

curl --compressed -s https://api.hdhomerun.com/api/xmltv?DeviceAuth="yourDeviceAuthsting" > guide.xml
If you all ready know how to parse XML, you're good to go. I wound up using xq to convert the XML to JSON, so that I could then use jq to extract the stuff I wanted. On the Linux system I do this on, xq is named xq-python and conversion looks like this:

Code: Select all

xq-python < guide.xml > guide.json
As mentioned above, this is not a complete solution. This will get your guide data and now you can manipulate it however you like. You'll still need to use the app to program your DVR, but that's doable now that the new interface is less buggy.

[1]: Once you have the XML guide data, one option you could look into is using XMLTVProject. I've not used it myself, so I don't know how well (or if) it will work for this.
