Roku app problems - cqcq42

Post by cqcq42 »

I replaced my Roku Premiere with the NO SOUND problem with a Roku 4850X Ultra which fixed that problem but added new ones.
If I try to skip forward while watching a pre-recorded show the screen often just goes blank and the app hangs. Worse, if I back out of watching and try again, I am taken back to the beginning where I definitely want to skip forward. The problem is so frequent that I went back to using an iPad and casting to my TV. Even casting to Roku works.
At some point I got this app crash:

My experiment to replace my Roku Premiere with a Roku Ultra did succeed in getting the HDHR app on Roku to permit sound, but the experiment is basically a failure due to the numerous bugs in the app.
Watching live TV works for a bit, then stops. Sometimes there is an on screen message about malformed data.
Watching recorded shows has the same problem plus trying to skip over commercials is a crap shoot and may result in a frozen, black screen (BSOD?)
So I cannot use the HDHR app on Roku and am forced to cast HDHR from my iPad to my Samsung TV. The app on iOS is not without its own problems. If I use the iPad immediately after a BSOD (without resetting) then the iOS app cannot find the HDHR so it too has crashed.
Pretty disappointing.

The new version of the UI (20250327) on iOS is unable to play Recorded content. All I get is a “Data not found” message with a “Go Back” button.

Please try again and let us know if it is working or not.

I'm having the same issues on Roku. Seems this has been a problem for a while now as I'm finding posts when I searched the forums on this topic there were several hits, going back months...

The only way I can reliably watch Live TV is on my computer.
Roku App: Frequently stops with malformed data. Works fairly well with recorded shows, but using fast forward can cause freezing.
Media Player on my Sony BluRay Player: Frequently freezes, requiring unplugging player. Media Players can play channels, but not pause live TV.
iOS app: This is used in casting mode to my Samsung TV and is the best of the three (Roku, Sony, iOS) in that the freezing is less frequent, but still annoying. Works well with recorded shows.

After purchasing many Roku devices over the years, I finally gave up over a year ago with similar issues you mentioned and switched to a $20 onn box. Much faster with instant skips when FF/REW'ing and no freezing like Roku. The ROKU CHANNEL is also available if you need that. When the bigger onn box came out ($50 I think) I bought that one too and moved the smaller one to the bedroom TV.
