Are we any close to an ETA of when an android based app will be released ?
ATSC 3.0 reception
I am about 60 miles south from Tampa and I cant get any ATSC 1.0 stations but I can get one station from nearby Sarasota. However, I received all Tampa ATSC 3.0 stations with a $40 attic antenna!!! But when all but FOX went DRM I had a 4 tuner Flex being used for only two stations. To get the networks I pointed a second antenna south to closer Ft Myers (which is not my market stations) and had a DUO there.
So I switched the Flex and Duo so I now had 4 turners on the ATSC 1.0 stations and the two-tuner Duo basically getting only one station. Amazingly, the Fox ATSC 3.0 station came in crystal clear on the Flex even though the antenna was pointed 130 degrees in a different direction !!!!
A lot of the antenna reception recommendations on line treat ATSC 1.0 and 3.0 the same with their advice but far from it.....3.0 is amazing. If I go to an antenna site, they recommend a purple outdoor antenna.
Too bad they scramble!!

Re: ATSC 3.0 reception
One thing to be aware of is the lighthouse effect. The ATSC 3.0 lighthouse stations are on different (and sometimes better) frequencies than their ATSC 1.0 counterparts. Some are even in completely different locations and directions. If your problem receiving ATSC 1.0 channels is due to terrain obstacles, use of VHF stations, or low broadcast power, ATSC 3.0 modulation improvements may not fix all of those.DennisFL wrote: Sat Jun 15, 2024 2:28 am I am about 60 miles south from Tampa and I cant get any ATSC 1.0 stations but I can get one station from nearby Sarasota. Of course, it'll probably be 10 years before we start seeing threads titled "All my ATSC 3.0 channels came in great, but now I can't receive anything".

Re: ATSC 3.0 reception
i may get modbusted for this but it is high-time that we the users and viewers start raising cane with the broadcasters since it is them that are encrypting the signal, it is high-time that the broadcasters justify to the public why they need to encrypt the signal and not just rely on the pirate crap.Cabal wrote: Sat Jun 15, 2024 6:31 amOne thing to be aware of is the lighthouse effect. Re: Encryption
I agree, but I do not see where we, the consumers, have any leverage with the broadcasters or anyone else. It would be nice if some powerful congressman on the Oversight Committee could pickup this issue and hammer the FCC. They have the power to regulate this stuff. I addressed the issue to my congressman's staff and it seems to be too complicated for them to even consider...

Re: Encryption
Something to think about...
Encryption is being forced by ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and Univision networks, not the local broadcasters.
A3SA was created by and is operated by ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and Univision.
If you can't watch OTA you will probably use the network provided streaming platform...
The network still makes the same money from the local broadcaster - no loss from you not watching your local broadcast.
The network gains income from you paying for the subscription service.
The network gains income from selling targeted advertising.
The network gains stock value from having more subscribers.
Encryption is a win all round for ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and Univision networks.

Re: Encryption
We have PLENTY of leverage as long as it's NOT mandated. Just don't buy any ATSC 3.0 tuner, AND continue to get the word out to everybody you know, that neither should they, because they are encrypting everything. Dissuade everybody you can from even considering anything to do with 3.0.LarrySB wrote: Tue Jun 18, 2024 7:46 am I agree, but I do not see where we, the consumers, have any leverage with the broadcasters or anyone else. Contact your congressmen, and tell them you are unhappy about them encrypting, etc. I've contacted mine and had replies. That might not do anything, but it lets them KNOW we won't have anything to do with ATSC 3.0, as long as they keep drm/encryption.
Re: Encryption
The alternative to watching via OTA is watching via streaming services which I suspect may be the goal... see my post here: viewtopic.php?p=399584#p399584MikeBear wrote: Tue Jun 18, 2024 8:20 am We have PLENTY of leverage as long as it's NOT mandated. Re: Encryption
How do the networks "force" the broadcasters to encrypt? Especially since only 2 of 5 3.0 channels are encrypted here.nickk wrote: Tue Jun 18, 2024 8:17 am Something to think about...

Re: Encryption
By telling them: "NO encryption, NO content" (meaning the creators won't allow 3.0 OTA to even exist without encryption, because they are scared their shows and such will be freely pirated)LarrySB wrote: Wed Jun 19, 2024 1:53 amHow do the networks "force" the broadcasters to encrypt? Re: Encryption
I am afraid the mechanics of the business are alien to me. I always thought, by reading the credits, that writers and producers create the content and the network pays for the shows. The networks are not going to stop buying shows, although that model seems to be dwindling to more unscripted stuff on OTA channels. Does a network really tell a broadcaster that unless they encrypt the signal, the broadcaster cannot have the show?

Re: Encryption
It's called licensing agreements and contracts are involved. So yes, the network / content OWNER can make any kind of LICENSING agreement they like and the broadcaster gets to sign the contract.LarrySB wrote: Wed Jun 19, 2024 6:11 am Does a network really tell a broadcaster that unless they encrypt the signal, the broadcaster cannot have the show?
