Request previous Firmware

Post by tzr916 »

First, I was shocked when I saw that the Third Party Software sub-forum is completely gone

I have been using HDHR5-4K BDA tuning method in Jriver Media Center for ATSC 1.0 live and recording for many years. On 9/14/25, I did a clean install of Windows 11 along with installing the latest HDHR software package, which installed Firmware 20250815 on the tuner. Now when I have two recordings set to start at the same time, Jriver throws an error "Digital TSRenderStreamsToWriter - Failed to create tune request Access is denied".

I have tried:
-reboot everything => no change
-uninstall HDHR version 20250815, reboot, install version 20250623 => no change
-uninstall MC 34.0.70, reboot, install MC 34.0.71 => no change
-tested on separate windows machine => no change

In case you want to look around in the Jriver logging of the issue:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Hz7Brn ... sp=sharing

Here is what the HDHR system log shows:

Code: Select all

20251010-21:04:56 Tuner: tuner3 streaming rtp to 192.168.1.93:64474
20251010-21:04:57 Tuner: tuner3 rtp stream ended (new request)
20251010-21:04:57 Tuner: tuner3 streaming rtp to 192.168.1.93:64474
20251010-21:05:11 Tuner: tuner2 streaming rtp to 192.168.1.93:64492
20251010-21:05:12 Tuner: tuner2 rtp stream ended (new request)
20251010-21:05:12 Tuner: tuner2 streaming rtp to 192.168.1.93:64492
20251010-21:08:01 Tuner: tuner3 rtp stream ended (stop request)
20251010-21:08:03 Tuner: tuner2 rtp stream ended (stop request)

I am looking for any help you can offer. Maybe you can provide a previous version of Firmware that I can try. Maybe you see something in the Jriver logs. Maybe you can see something more using my Device ID 10801B08. I just enabled tuner diagnostics and ran two jriver recordings to duplicate the problem.

The diagnostic log shows two channels streaming at once via BDA without issue (tuners 0 and 1).

Ya, but jriver logs show repeating attempts to start the second recording, pops up a "critical error", and finally starts recording about 15 seconds after the first one. Look closely at the start times.

Jriver asking if the device was asleep. Seems odd.

EDIT: I've now tried five (older) versions of Jriver, they all suffer the same problem. Really hoping there is a way to downgrade the tuner firmware!

What is at IP 192.168.1.105? It is tuning a bunch of bogus channel frequencies, but we have no diagnostic data from it to see exactly what is happening.

That would be my laptop. I was doing lots of testing today. Jriver scans every RF during setup looking for valid channels. I ran tv setup 4 or 5 times today, trying to figure this all out.

Made some progress.... For whatever reason, if I "facory reset" jriver, I don't get the critical error on the very first set of "same time recordings". But any attempt after that, does produce the critical error.

I'm waiting for jriver to comment on this new information.

I don't know if it helps, but the BDA drivers for tuners 1-3 are never even loaded. Tuner 0 gets loaded and gets all the control commands, but there isn't any logging of the other tuners even being loaded, much less trying to tune.

Thank you for the reply.

Please note that my issue did not start until I upgraded the Firmware on my HDHR5-4K. A member of the Jriver dev team has an HDFX-4K with older firmware and cannot reproduce the issue.

So, has something changed in the newer Firmware as it relates to BDA, that can be relayed to them?

No firmware changes relating to BDA.

Firmware is irrelevant to this. The BDA driver does not attempt to communicate with the HDHomeRun device until it is told to actually do something that requires it, like tuning a channel. There is no communication without the driver being loaded. It's kind of like asking if the engine is the reason why your car isn't starting when you haven't put the key in the ignition switch yet.

1. Is this information that JRiver should already be aware of?
2. Are there any changes on how Windows 11 implements ATSC 1.0 BDA vs how Windows 10 does?

It might give them an idea of where to look and get them away from suggesting firmware as the issue.

I am not aware of any changes to BDA in Windows 11. Microsoft stopped updating the documentation for it in 2018 and basically says that it's now considered legacy code and to use it at your own risk.
