HDHomerun Prime kills my internet

Post by rnwells »

I have been running HDHomerun Prime with a Cox cable card and Cox Tuning Adapter successfully for years. Suddenly my internet went out. After hours of trouble shooting I swapped the Cox Panaromic modem and all coax and ethernet cables out and still no internet. I found if I remove the HomeRun and Tuning Adapter from the system my internet and phone work. I am at a loss on how to determine if it is the Cox Tuning Adapter, Cox Cable Card, or my Prime. Any suggestion aew welcomed. Thanks.

Out of curiosity, are you disconnecting them from the coax or the Prime from the ethernet?

Assuming that the equipment that you listed is connected together properly, you should be able to watch non-SDV (switched digital video) channels without the tuning adapter connected to anything. Non-SDV channels are typically the most frequently viewed channels; chances are Fox, NBC, ABC, and CBS are non-SDV. So if you can reconnect the Prime without the tuning adapter and still view non-SDV channels while browsing the internet, you could rule out the Prime and the cable card from being the problem.

Shouldn't be an issue at all... but which model ta and is your area in the process of or already done its high split conversion.

A high split area will need a hsc to replace the ta... it would be unusual for a prime to still get oob while still having a partial benefit of improved internet upstream channels also in the range of the ta's upstream as the high split should have forced "oob" moved to a higher range than a card looks for which is the main purpose of the hsc to essentially provide oob to the prime. If you have a hsc, make sure the input and output are correct.

Last summer cox switched my neighborhood to iptv only as the rfog onu's couldn't handle the high split (would have had to replace about 100 of them) while every neighborhood around me went to hsc's and could continue using a cablecard device with a hsc.

Disconnected Prime from both coax and ethernet. I have the High Split tuning adapter. It has been working properly for months on my system.

Disregard my prior post; your original post stated that you had a tuning adapter, not a high split converter device.

Connected Prime directly without tuning adapter as suggested. Same issue. It disconnects my internet and phone. Are there internal diagnostics for the Prime?

What happens when you disconnect just the ethernet? If that solves it, you might make sure you are on the latest beta firmware as I believe that had some mdns fixes that helped some networks experiencing some broadcast storms (see viewtopic.php?p=403511#p403511 and nickk's reply after for a recent example of what I mentioned... a later the person seemed to confirm the beta cleared things up).

The prime is a one way device so should not possibly affect your cable internet/phone though can cause network issues if network isn't behaving... over the years I have seen a few power supplies cause issues with various equipment so won't rule out the "prime" causing issues on rf side. The one that was strangest to me was one for an 8 port switch that when plugged in caused issues with phones including neighbor's phones (and these were 5000 sq ft homes with yards) from receiving caller id info (and on my phone you could hear more audio distortions) and that would happen just plugging the wall wart in and waiting 10-20 minutes to heat up regardless of it powering anything... so things like that can happen and are sometimes hard to track down. I would also make sure that there are no switching loops in your network that may often be overlooked by a device that has both a wifi and a wired connection as a wired loop may be easier to spot.

If disconnecting just the ethernet doesn't fix it I would concentrate on the HSC as that can interfere with lots of things when not working properly since it is a two way device. Make sure it's coax output is only going to the prime and not split (any split should be before HSC). If you are in a high split area, the prime shouldn't work at all without the HSC.

With just ethernet disconnected I have the same issue. No internet or phone. Same with cable card pulled. I have updated to the latest firmware. Guess I have to accept that I had a good run for years and it is over.

Does your modem have a status web page you can reach? Most of them use http://192.168.100.1 , but some ISPs disable them because they like making troubleshooting difficult. Curious if you see a difference in the upstream and downstream numbers when connected vs. not.

Not sure I understand the recommendation. I have zero upload or download when Prime is connected.

I believe the idea is that if the Prime or TA are bad and filling your local coax with noise, you will see the signal levels on the modem's status page drop significantly.

Inexplicitly everything began to work correctly yesterday and remains so today. I have cancelled the Cox service call but am not confident that this is resolved.
