Super Bowl in 4K HDR

CBS today confirmed that it will offer next month’s Super Bowl in 4K HDR (High Dynamic Range). Does that mean OTA also??

No. The 4K coverage is limited to MVPDs (Cable, sat, telco/fiber, streaming)

If Verizon FiOS has a deal in place for CBS's 4K sports, their customers will be able to get it via the Prime. But the rest of the cable providers who have live 4K sports like Optimum and Xfinity use IP delivery for 4K instead of QAM.

As mentioned, this won't apply to OTA. But I think a fair size group of people use other services alongside their OTA setup.

Not sure if anyone else saw ESPN's 4K broadcast of the College Football Championship game, but it was fantastic. No commercial breaks at all, radio announcers, and 4K quality from the "skycam."

Looking forward to the Super Bowl broadcast.

It is my understanding that as we speak not a single television station in the United States of America is broadcasting in 4K.
Have I missed something?

Wish they would make the OTA broadcast the 1080p HDR.
If it is coming over IP, i.e. internet - prefer they send me the 1080p HDR and leave the upscale to my screen (better upscaler anyway) to save the data bits (less contention, less data cap usage, etc.).
TBH I would prefer 1080p120 over any 4K for sports.

Depends on what you mean by 'television station'.
No OTA stations broadcast 4K or HDR at the moment -
Cable has trialed some 4K channels but looks like they are preferring to deliver over IP
IPTV providers such as YoutubeTV do make some ESPN, NBC Sports, and Fox Sports broadcasts with 4K - for a ridiculous cost ($10/mo + high data usage)
So - yes there are 'television stations' that broadcast in 4K - but not all content, not all the time, most of it is VOD, and your ability to view is subject to a lot of variables

There's no native 1080p OTA broadcast either. as far as I know, all current 3.0 1080p signals are upscaled simulcast from 1080i or 720p. The pipes from network source to local stations are still 1080i/720p.

CBS is talking about their streaming, not OTA.

In other words, no television station in the USA is broadcasting a 4K Super-Bowl signal through their antenna located on a big tall tower which is to be received by a user's television antenna and consequently used to put a 4K picture on a television screen.

Of course there are those users who also have the latest generation of upscaler. And after upscaling 1080p to 4K are very happy with the results.

not very many broadcasting stations have engineers that know "advanced code injection" that would alllow for 1920p or 1920i which is 4k and would include the high dynamic range audio and furthermore those physical layer pipes require a knowledge of advanced code injection.

note: nickk or neds are not in violation of any NDA since i do have an understanding of the processes involved.

Are we really going to get 4K broadcast? I tried watching the Texans vs Ravens game this Saturday and ABC had it blacked out. The 1080i channel worked fine.
