AC-4 cloud transcoding is a service specific to HDHomeRun apps.

I believe Channels DVR is currently decoding AC-4 locally using a patched/development version of ffmpeg, but I am not a user.

I know no one cares :D but I now have a Roku Ultra as of yesterday, FireTV Cube and AppleTV device to test out with this. All the newest models.

Get to work dude! :D
I have a new FireTV Cube, and I'm not smart enough to figure out if it's working with AC4 on its own, or if the SiliconDust stream is what I'm hearing. It looks and sounds GREAT, that's all I know.
But, so does my $20 Wal-Mart special.

From what I know, cloud transcoding only generates 2.0 audio, not 5.1

Hence, if you have an AVR connected, you can tell if you are receiving 2.0 or 5.1 audio to determine if your device supports AC-4 or not, assuming your local station broadcasts 5.1 all the time.

I only have a Visio sound bar with wireless rear speakers and sub and can not really tell any difference. I know this is a basic setup, but sounds good to me.

I do not pretend to understand everything going on with ATSC 3.0. Does the information below sound right?

I THINK that my Emby Server (getting its signal from my SiliconDust 4K device) has indicated the ATSC 3.0 video is coming through the server and the AC4 sound is apparently being converted to Dolby 7.1 by my ONN $20 Walmart Google TV device. Apparently the $20 device can handle HEVC.

Condensed "Stats for Nerds" below

Code: Select all

Streaming info:
Video codec: HEVC (direct)
Audio codec: DOLBY
Audio channels:7.1
Conversion reason: Unsupported audio
It seems to work quite well. I am actually holding out some hope for ATSC 3.0 if the blasted DRM problem can be sorted out.

The ONN can handle 4K HEVC without problem. So, these 1080p HEVC is piece of a cake. However, it is not capable of handling AC-4 audio. It must be your Emby server does the conversion. Typically, ATSC 3.0 station only broadcasting 5.1 audio so far.

Both Emby web and Emby Theater do use the unreleased ffmpeg AC-4 patch. If you are getting 7.1 I think there is something wrong in their transcoding options.

The new FireTV 4K and 4K max that were announced today should also handle AC4 according to specs... I have my max on order but I don't think they are delivering until the 27th or 29th but in the past I have got some a couple days early.

I'm getting stereo audio with the new Max on Atsc.3.0 channels. Is there a setting in the app or the fire tv? Audio settings says Dolby Matt is supported.

Is AC4 Dolby Matt?

MAT not necessarily supports AC4 but it is used for Atmos and I believe transcoding... the codecs list AC3 (Dolby Digital) / EAC3 (Dolby Digital Plus) / Atmos(DDP+JOC) / AC4(Atmos) / Dolby TrueHD (Atmos)

Just getting HDHomeRun installed on my new 4k Max and trying out the ATSC 3 channels... though nickk stated he was getting one, I turned diagnostics on incase someone at SD wishes to take a look... also discovered we now have a second station in phoenix that is encrypted as now both CBS and NBC are.
