List of Supported devices

Post by spencer777 »

Looking to get a Flex 4k. Is there a list of Supported devices and if they can do AC4?

We provide a cloud transcode service so most player devices will work regardless of built in support. There is no lag or delay or increase in channel change time.

If you specifically want built in AC4 support the current list is:
Roku Ultra 4800X
Roku TVs (modern)
LG TVs 2019+
Fire TV Edition TVs (modern)
Fire TV Cube (3rd gen)
Fire TV Stick 4K (new 2023 model)
Fire TV Stick 4K Max (new 2023 model)
Mecool KM2 Plus
Mi 4K stick (latest)
Many Android phones and tablets.

(also some HiSense and TCL TVs running Android have AC4 support but it is broken).

Edit - Added 2023 Fire TV products

Ok Thanks. I have an Apple tv 4k, Chromecast 4k and 2018 LG OLED. Looks like I need a new device

Apple TV 4K works, utilizing our cloud transcode service.
Chromecast 4K works, utilizing our cloud transcode service.

Actually, I'm sure the LG story is that it is 2017+ OLED sets do support AC4.

I have an LG C7 and HDHR app runs fine on it with AC4->transcoded->AC3 audio is delivered "pass through" to my AVR over HDMI-ARC (no support for eARC yet in C7 2017). On my C9 there is ARC/eARC support for the HDHR app running on the C9.

So if you have a 2018 LG OLED model that WILL handle AC4 "native" and not require SD's cloud-assisted decoding to 2.0 stereo. You will have local LG-provided AC4 DD5.1 transcoding to AC3 DD5.1, and output either using the TV speakers or via ARC/eARC to your AVR.

Ok That's how I currently have My B8 set up, ARC to my receiver. So I should be good, I feel the native LG app has better PQ than my other devices.

Only select LG models before 2019 may have ac-4 support... personally I didn't see such on "all" their spec sheets until 2020 so that is the figure I prefer to use.

Wouldn't my receiver do it it like older receivers could convert eAc3 to AC3?

Potential problems with that... first i have not heard if any receiver actually handling ac4 yet... particularly via hdmi... most things won't passthrough ac4, when the lg tv (app) gets ac4 the tv outputs ac3 to the receiver so in general the receiver gets ac4.

However far prior to the online transcoding (it actually broke a couple versions before that but that may have been a chromecast update) when my chromecast was connected to my lg atmos soundbar, the sound came through just fine and that was about the only thing I previously got sound from so it may be possible to support such passthrough on some devices, but I fear maintaining such across the many combinations, especially when nothing gets reported correctly would be nearly impossible so in those cases it probably is best to do the online transcoding by the app which is expected to improve over time.

I couldn't believe how rich the sound sounded on my new samsung s23+ when I tried it so I am assuming it is properly handling it.

Thank you for providing the list of ROKU devices that would handle the AC 4. I picked up a ROKU 4802 and it works like a charm with the 4K Flex. Both the audio and video on the ATSC 3.0 channels perform very well. For anyone else that might be considering OTA in the Richmond VA area, I can say the ATSC 1.0 and 3.0 transmitters are both up and my signal from 35 miles out provides a good viewing experience.

Is there anyway I can tell if my device is handling AC-4 directly or being transcoded? I have a Sony TV with ATSC 3.0 tuner. I also have a new Android TV device that is using similar hardware as Mecool device listed above, Rocktek G2.

If you turn on "send diagnostic information" then restart the app and play an ATSC 3.0 channel we can tell from the diagnostic logs. Nothing user visible unfortunately.
Also suggest adding the Device ID of your 4K model to your forum profile.

Thanks. Just updated my profile with new device ID of Flex 4K.

11:19PM (EDT): Sony X900H
11:24PM: Rocktek G2
This morning, tested all different audio setting on Android TV OS of G2 (Bitstream, Auto, Dolby dd and Dolby dddp. The last two options just showed after a new firmware update upgrade. No idea what they do.

While waiting for confirmations, I did some testing using the recorded ts file from DVR. I confirmed that my ts file contains following:
* 1080p HEVC video
* AC-4 5.1 main audio
* AC-4 2.0 secondary audio

Use Just (Video) Player app play this file on my various Android TV devices, here are what I found:
1. Chromecast with Google TV 4K (Google TV 12): no audio
2. Rocktek G2 (Android TV 11): audio played back as DD/DD+
3. T-Mobile T-Vision Hub v2 (Android TV 11): audio played back as DD/DD+
4. Sony X900H TV (Android TV 10): audio played back fine using the TV speaker.
5. Dynalink Android TV (Android TV 12): no audio

Not sure if that means we can direct play AC-4 audio from HDHR app on devices other than CCwGTV dongle and Dynalink.

To avoid forum expiration (as people are going to want this list for quite some time), I would like to suggest that SD create a curated list in the announcement section of this forum (or in some other place that SD maintains such as info.hdhomerun.com), with the usual caveats about almost certainly not being complete, and that the manufacturers may (will?) update firmware and break things from time to time.
