Encryption

Post by shawn_75 »

Is viewing of encrypted ATSC 3.0 channels supported in the app? Have one that's been encrypted for a number of days now and cannot view it.

Not yet, we are working with A3SA on this.

ATSC 3.0 will be launching in Boston and Miami the first week of January with encryption, so it would be nice to have it available on the SiliconDust boxes. Hope A3SA can get you set up with the certs soon! I'll be in Miami for the launch there and would love to be able to see WTVJ (NBC, CBS, Telemundo & Univision) on my HDHomerun box.

I've been waiting for ATSC 3.0 to go live in Miami for a while, very excited for next week. My question, how do you know it will be encrypted? Thanks!

Is the A3SA only looking to insure the integrity of ATSC 3.0 streams or is this purely for DRM purposes? It smells like the latter under the guise of "security" to make it sound better.

Hi Nick,

I just got bit by the lack of support. I know you guys care and are working feverishly on it. Please keep us updated or let me know if you need a tester!

For quite a while now I've happily enjoyed my Flex 4K recording ATSC 3.0 signals in the Orlando area. Yesterday I noticed several recordings were totally blank, both on WESH TV 102.1. I did a re-scan and the channel dropped off of the list. I reached out to WESH TV Engineering and I got back this response:
As of yesterday Hearst corporate in conjuction with the ATSC 3.0 Pearl group requested that we turn on DRM encryption. Some atsc 3.0 receivers do no work with this function.
Thus, as of 2/1/2023 I no longer can receive the far superior NBC ATSC 3.0 signal. And because it was in my list all along, I missed some important recordings this week.

Just curious, are the recordings themselves fine and it’s just that the player needs an encryption key update or are the recordings themselves bad and the Flex 4K needs the keys in order to record the data properly?

SiliconDust,

Is there any update on this support or an official statement from you on the plan for DRM Encryption?

Nick is still going back and forth with A3SA. Nick has a outline of how things work with our products and how we keep the video secure, and A3SA needs to approve that, and I hear things are going well. They give him things to test, he shows them the result, they go over different situations and different platforms, rinse repeat, etc. It's actually going faster than I thought it would, but I'm just a fly on the wall for this part, and I am not a developer. Nick will have all the juicy technical details.

FWIW, I too have this problem in Orlando this month whenever I try 102.1. Sometimes (often?) the recording from list will go ahead but on channel 2.1 (since my antenna is working with their VHF 11 frequency).

The latest beta firmware detects protected channels:
viewtopic.php?t=20613

For the moment attempting to play an encrypted channel will result in a "Content protection required" error message.

Any ETA or update on the progress or the SD official statement that you can share? Is this something we should expect in 3, 6, 12 months or more? Will our existing hardware (Flex 4K) handle it or is there going to be a trade in process? Etc

All HDHomeRun ATSC 3.0 tuners (CONNECT 4K, SCRIBE 4K, and FLEX 4K) will soon have DRM support.
