US OTA channel scans to 51

Post by jamesm113 »

Curious if there is a plan to update the US OTA channel scan to stop at RF36 now that the FCC repack is completed.

Looks like there was a PR created: https://github.com/Silicondust/libhdhomerun/pull/28 but there's a merge conflict and it was closed.

I can create a fresh PR if that would be helpful.

RF 38-51 is still in use for some LPTV signals and translators and in other ATSC countries like Canada.

A new struct could be introduced for non-US ATSC countries - looks like there are already structs for TW, JP, AU, EU, and KR

Channels 38-51 are used by low power stations and by in-house modulation systems. We don't have an immediate plans to shorten the channel map.

The ideal would be to have the widest range still in use (2-51 in the US and Canada) but allow the users to reset the upper and lower channels to what they know are available in their area. That could also be useful to add a new channel by setting the range to just that channel, provided users also have the option to keep or delete any channels already scanned outside the range. And it could be used by those who have to rotate their antenna to get different channels. Of course the best way to deal with channels in multiple directions, if an omnidirectional antenna wouldn't work, would be to set up 2 or more antennas connected separately to 2 or more HDHRs.

The ideal would be to allow the user to override the automatic scans. Channels could be added/excluded by frequency/RF channel and PID; virtual channel numbers could be overridden to allow for multiple channels that can both be received but present the same virtual number.

Of course, after years and years of requesting these features, the likelihood of them being implemented only slightly greater than winning the lottery without purchasing a ticket.

Looks like there are 4 LP channels left in the US on 38-51: https://www.rabbitears.info/statistics.php

Virtually all, if not all of those stations are no longer on the air. The trick to scanning fewer than the full channel 2 - 51 range is detailed at: https://www.avsforum.com/threads/live-b ... t-62353332 Your hdhomerun_config.exe needs to be replaced by renaming one of the other channel range files in the zip file that is included at that site. It worked for me.
