Struggling to understand how to use both tuners in HDHomeRun Extend

I'm really having trouble understanding how to use the two tuners in my HDHomeRun. I have two Macs running EyeTV 3 (last version that supported the HDHomeRuns). I set EyeTV on one Mac to used tuner 0 (with tuner 1 off) and the other EyeTV/Mac to use tuner 1 (with tuner 0 off). Is this the correct way to do it? Are there other options?
