Has my HDHomerun been hacked?

Post by Muppets4 »

I am a long time user of the Expand tuners. I use them for showing TV with TV Mosaic and before that DVBLink. I am telling you this because I would like you to know I am an experienced user. The behavior I am seeing now I did not see before.

What is happening is that I see more tuners being used then I use myself. For example I am watching on one tuner, but in the web portal from the HDHomerun there are two channels in use. I also use NewCS to read my card, and I can see a lot of activity. Every 20 seconds a check is done on the card. To rule out a flaw in NewCS I tried it also without it running. The behavior stays the same. In TV Mosaic there is a function to monitor the tuners. Over there there is just one tuner being watched. The channel I am watching myself. I checked also if it happens when disabling the tv mosaic service in the windows task manager. No difference.

I am getting spooked now. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know.

look at where it is being streamed to then check that device. Depending on how various clients access the tuner, I have seen cases where it never closes the original requested stream when it falls over to the next. The tuners are available to anyone or anything on your network that may request such.

This is adress is from my home server where the HDHomerun software and the tv mosaic software is installed on. Can’t see what software is using it.

My tuner status is showing:

Tuner 0 Channel 642.000 MHz
Tuner 1 Channel 642.000 MHz
Tuner 2 Channel not in use
Tuner 3 Channel not in use

My channel 1 status is:
Virtual Channel none
Frequency 690.000 MHz
Program Number none
Modulation Lock a8qam64-6900
Signal Strength 97%
Signal Quality 95%
Symbol Quality 100%
Streaming Rate 1.032 Mbps
Resource Lock 192.168.1.56

Just changed frequencies. Keeps doing that.

No, it has 4 tuners. I believe it was called prime though.

Original post stated Expand which is basically a "prime" without cablecard for use in with DVB-C systems and essentially uses the OOB tuner as a 4th tuner. (I do believe there are 5th gen expands out as well which are more similar to the quatro)

I am confused though as everything I am currently seeing on tvmosaic would probably be using http rather than legacy rtp.

  • The RTP streams seem to be the full mux.
  • The provided logs also seem to show that both tuner0 and tuner1 are being accessed from the same client, .56.
  • The details of the provided tuner shows that it has been locked to the client, which wouldn't be the case from a randomly accessed web client.
  • Perhaps the other tuner being accessed is for EIT data, or scanning for other frequencies, some other network purpose? (Nothing else makes sense, since the other tuner is locked to the same IP, and is a full mux, too.

So it starts and stops. Almost if anyone is really viewing channels. But I can assure you that nobody did.

My system originally was called HDHR3-4DC and then somewhere down the line SiliconDust renamed this product Expand.

Well it's obvious there's some process on your machine that is constantly—and briefly—accessing your tuner. Now you just need to narrow it down.

Since you've indicated you're using TVMosiac, perhaps you ought to check with DVBLogic and see why their program keeps hitting your tuner.

Tv mosaic does not respond on their forums anymore. And tickets are unanswered. It is expected to end soon. There are even full manuals to get competing software on their forums now. Unbothered by admins. It's starting to look like the project is going to be abandoned soon. And that's really sad, cause it's been great. I switched hardware a few weeks ago and have to reset the license. But no one home. The last update is from may 2019.
