SoCal - lost MANY OTA channels

Post by muzicman0 »

Anyone know if there are problems with certain channels in the south orange county area? I used to get ABC, Fox, Comet, plus others. Now (in the last few months), those channels don't work any more. I still get a significant number of channels, such as CBS, CW, NBC, but I lost others. Anyone else having issues? I replace my HDHomeRuns thinking that may be the problem (I was using DUALs, now using CONNECTS). I am hesitant to try a new antenna, but will if needed.

Probably isn’t the HDHomerun.

First, go to rabbitears.info and find your location on the signal search map and view the report — see if that still lists all of the channels you expect to receive. (Some May have changed frequency or broadcast power.)

Also, I would suggest you go to avsforum.com and search for the name of your broadcast market (city) — most have an active discussion thread where you may see news about station changes, or you can ask them.

According to rabbitears.info, I should still be getting it. it is in the 'fair' range, but so are the others that I am getting. I will check out the AVS forums also.

I think it is probably my antenna. I believe it is a UHF only antenna, and most of the channels (perhaps all of them) that I am not getting are VHF. Still not sure why I used to get them, but perhaps they changed frequencies.

Go here: Repack Plan (RabbitEars). Select your major market from the drop-down list. It will tell you the old and new RF channel assignments for the stations in your major market.

The Phases of the repack are listed over on the right side of the listing. Here is the repack Phase schedule: Transition Schedule (repack)

Phase 9 was recently completed. Phase 10, the last phase, is to be completed July 1. There are stations throughout the country that have not moved as per their schedule. They are operating on STAs (Station Temporary Authority.) They will have to move eventually or go off the air.

Some stations have chosen to shut down, rather than incur the expense of participating in the repack.

And, yes: In the repack, some stations that were on UHF were moved into VHF-High. Many OTA users were caught unawares this way.

Thanks. I ordered a new antenna. We'll see if that takes care of it. If not, it's Prime, so I can send it back. I also haven't purchased the Connect's (borrowed from a friend), so if the DUAL's still work, I should be good to go.

Thanks. On a whim (because the Amazon antenna hadn't shipped yet), I bought a new antenna (RCA Yagi) from Home Depot. I am now getting everything I should, and want!

Thanks everyone!

So when I mounted the antenna, I somehow broke the matching transformer (I swear, all I did was look at it and it fell apart!). I went ahead and connected it, and ordered new ones on Amazon, which came today. Now, after switching them out, I lost some channels, and my signal quality is much lower on the ones I did have (the UHF ones). I tried going back to the original ones, but that didn't seem to matter. I'm really confused. Nothing moved, although, I did try to re-aim, which made no difference. I'm still getting the channels I want, but it would be nice to figure this out. signal quality is down to ~50-55% on some channels, although strength and symbol are 98-100% on the ones I get. Any ideas? Is it possible I messed up the cable end when doing this? I can't imagine weather proof tape had anything to do with it, but...???

And now...after rebooting the HDHomeRuns, AND changing the splitter from a 2 way to a 4 way (added 2 DUALs to the 2 Connects), I am back to all channels. I'm REALLY confused! But if it stays this way, so be it!

Oh, and signal quality is back up to it's normal ~98%. so weird.

When strength says 100% you don't know what it is and too high will cause quality to drop and if quality drops too much the channel won't be added. In many cases LTE filters should probably be used.

These days with the repacks its not uncommon for towers to also be running very low as work is done on other stations. But that depends on if any tower work is going on.
