Turn on hardware acceleration and see if that gives different results.

With hardware acceleration enabled on the FireTV Gen2 kodi will play and stutter and rebuffer then continue playing.
On the FireTV Stick 4K, the decoder will crash and I have to restart the FireTV stick 4K to be able to get things like YouTube or Hulu working again. To some degree I believe something is being encountered in the live tv playback and each device is handling differently with the 4K stick more drastically than my other devices.

So the decoder still sucks then. We might have to just block the hardware decoder entirely and do it in software. Do you see this on every channel? Or is it limited to just 1080i, or just 720p, or HD but not SD, etc.?

Thanks Jason, I thought that was the conclusion you/support came to on other forums as well as the response I got on my still open ticket from October of last year for this exact same issue. You were going to put logic in to fallback to the software decoder on 1080i to correct, but this has not been implemented as of yet, right? We also know this is not a wholly silicon dust issue to fix, when this occurs it crashes the entire decoder driver, but hdhr is always the source of the crash.

I know I provided an example file that point with the exception that you can reproduce the behavior at will, but exactly the same behavior on all fire TV devices (gen2 fire TV and fire TV stick 4k) aside from the insignia fire TV built in and the gen 1 fire TV cube, the others all exhibit very similar behavior as what is being discussed here.

Usually happens on like the History Channel, Bravo, MTV east, Food Network, Cooking Channel, I guess those are all HD haven't tested SD channels since I block those. You did ask me before an Fox Sports and QVC, and it doesn't crash on those channels. I would love to be able to use the HD Homerun App without having to resort to using the Kodi HDHR Addon in Software Mode, it's not ideal for my family. I would love to just have them launch the App and watch LiveTV. To some degree, I think it affects all FireTVs I have, I have 2 FireTV Sticks ones with the new remote. a FireTV Stick 4k, 2 FireTV Gen2 and a FireTV 4K Pendent and to some degree they all have issues, the FireTV Gen2 set tops fair better but still do crash but don't take out the decoder while the other devices will require a restart to restore video capability. Not sure why other apps don't have this issue like Netflix, Hulu, Pluto, they run all day long without issues. I'd be happy to test a software only version of the app or have it be able to switch hardware/software decoding in app.

Can someone confirm if SD channels also cause the crash or not? We want to continue to use the decoder for anything that works, and only block it for things that don't. Seems like 720p works OK but 1080i doesn't.

Jason, the few times I have watched SD channels I have not seen issues, I will keep an SD channel on that I usually have issues with like HGTV or Food network and let you know. I would imagine the ultimate answer is no freezing because the SD channels are 480P and I think from previous research it was related to 1080i format playback issues

SD channels are 480i, so if it was something related to the handling of interlaced video it would affect 480i and 1080i but not 720p.

Just wanted to cover all bases but posted in the other thread as well, the latest update to 317 corrected the crashing I was seeing consistently with the example recording I provided and it is now working flawlessly. If you were having similar crashes test with the latest version.

Thank you to all of the devs that worked on this and thank you Nick and good luck! Sorry to see you go.

Thanks!
