No Tuners Available

Postby msuckow » Tue Jan 29, 2019 11:20 am

Last night, I had set the DVR to record 4 shows (let's call them A, B, C, and D). I have a HDHR3-CC, so 3 tuners.
The recording schedule was:
8 PM: A (1 hour)
9 PM: B (1 hour)
10 PM: C and D (1 hour)

A recorded properly.
B recorded for about 15 minutes and the log had several messages such as "timeout - retrying B" and "no tuners available to record B" (B is on the same channel as A)
C and D never recorded and the log states: "no tuners available to record ..."

I cannot identify which tuners were available or busy from the log file, which makes it difficult to debug the issue.
No devices were tuned in at these times.

Any ideas?

Check the tuner device log. It should tell you what was using the tuners at that time. Keep in mind log times are UTC.

Good idea.
Here is the relevant section:

It appears that only tuner 0 was in use.

20190129-05:20:13 System: ip address expired

These messages suggest something is wrong with your network operations. You should (almost) never see IP addresses expire as the tuners follow the usual DHCP expiration process (starting about half the time from the scheduled expiration, and increasing frequency as the expiration gets closer to renew the address, those renewals typically happen without expiration). If the tuner IP addresses expire, your other clients IPs could be expiring too, which will result in various timeouts, recoveries, and/or unable to find the tuners. Other than when I update the firmware on my network switches a few times a year (or unplugged the network cable, which actually happens even less frequently) I just do not see the tuner logs show that the IP address needed to be reacquired.

Are all your clients and tuners wired to the same switch? You may need to share a bit regarding your network topology and devices. Also make sure you are on the latest firmware (there were a couple of edge cases with certain very specific Ethernet devices that was fixed over a year ago).

Thanks for the analysis.

My network topology is as follows:

Room 1: Cable modem -> Netgear Nighthawk X6 router -> hard-wired to Windows 10 PC acting as the DVR.

Room 2: Amped AC1750 Access Point -> connected to the HDHR3-CC. The Access Point is linked to the router via wifi AC on the 5 GHz band. The AC1750 is new as of two weeks ago, and seems stable.

The HDHomeRun firmware version is 20180817.

I'll keep a close eye on the logs to see if this was an Heisenbug.

My suggestion would be to get the tuner off the access point as you are much more likely to have problems (surprised you did that as it is a prime and you have a cable modem and router so ideally the prime would go there)... I would also strongly suggest no wireless involved to anything meant to be a DVR and use wifi only for clients when absolutely necessary.

True; it would probably make sense to relocate the tuner. It’s where it is for historical reasons ( I didn’t have cable modem back then or an active cable connection near the router).

Note that I’ve had this setup for over two years, and the wifi have delivered quite well. However, your point is well taken.

Update: I relocated the tuner and connected it to the router. All has been well since.
Thanks for the assistance.
