HDHR Android app - live TV A/V sync issues

Postby gooman » Thu Aug 09, 2018 4:29 am

I'm seeing quite noticeable problems with A/V sync in the HDHR Android app when viewing live TV on my Nvidia Shield.

These problems don't appear when watching programs recorded from the HDHR (using Plex DVR in my case), watching on a TV attached to the Shield. Neither do I get problems with any other Shield video app (Netflix, Amazon Prime, BBC iPlayer).

The problems seems to have got worse since the DRM update (though I may simply just be noticing it more since roughly that time).

The audio seems to be in front of the video by up to at least 250ms - though it also seems to vary a lot, as if I try to add extra delay it still seems impossible to avoid it altogether.

I appreciate that there may be some drift with live TV due to frame timing inconsistencies with a live signal ... but why around 250ms worse than every other app on the same platform?

I have seen this as well on my Shield. It might not even be as much as a 250ms delay when it happens, but the A/V sync is off just enough to be annoying.

Any difference on SD vs. HD channels?

For me, SD and HD sync are off about the same amount. Just enough to be perceptible.

When I view the same channels, SD and HD, in WMC on my Win7 box, sync is perfect.

Yep, SD and HD seem the same to me too.

I have also experienced this issue and so had the wife while watching live TV on the Shield. Of course she notices it more than I do.

With DRM being implemented I'm seeing it more trying to migrate off of WMC and showing the wife her television interface which won't be an easy task.

Before that we were still mostly using WMC.

My audio sync problems got resolved by turning "surround Sound Auto" to off in the Shield settings

I've got the 2017 Shield Pro with a 2TB WD USB3 external drive for recordings.

I've got the 2017 Shield (non-pro), running Shield Experience 7.0.1 (Android 8/Oreo).

Seeing quite a lot of frame drops too. Not constant - bursts of missed frames every now and then. The bigger the screen the more it's noticeable - can see easily on a 50"

I can confirm this with spdif out of TV with original 16GB Shield and a new one too using TV's speakers on Panasonic. Not in W10, either live or recorded. Recording out of sync on Shields. 131F4A88, 131045A9

I'm also seeing this from time to time, using a Shield & Connect that I bought new about two months ago. I also have the surround sound disabled since it was sometimes resulting in no audio (on multiple apps). Sometimes I notice a momentary freeze in the picture then the sync is off. Restarting the app resets the sync for live TV.
