It would still require widespread availability of ATSC 3.0 tuners in cars (or phones), and that hasn't even happened in TVs yet.

If they don't make the same mistakes the company behind HDRadio, ATSC 3 radio might have a fighting chance. Expensive licensing I believe is what hindered HDRadio more than anything else. This is why the number of stations that use it is really low and unless you buy a new car radio, you really have to hunt to find a receiver.

However honestly even if the licensing for ATSC 3 radio was free, I don't think it has much of a chance now either. That ship had already sailed. In a world where nearly every has a smart phone with free streaming radio stations being a dime a dozen, I don't think any new digital radio standard stands much of a chance here in the US.

This is what I fear with DRM on ATSC 3 television stations. The media companies pushing for it will suffer the same fate as HDRadio. Greed will always tank a standard before it has a chance to begin.

New technology is nice and all, but the primary purpose of new standards is to generate new licensing revenue.

I understand that but the emphasis is on "expensive." I get that they need to make money but the company behind HDRadio made everything too expensive. I've emailed my local stations and asked if they would ever upgrade to HDRadio and the answer was always no because of the expensive equipment and the expensive licensing. That and no one seems to be buying the receivers. I looked on their page to see what receivers are available. Let's just say not many that are cheap. I have one (Sangean HDR-14) and it cost me over $50 on Amazon and thats just a portable radio. If you want something to plug into your av receiver, you won't find one under $200. That's a lot of money to pay for a standard that is only on a couple of stations in my area.

Ok doing a quick edit. I'm at my local Walmart and am looking at the car stereos. Not a single one carries the HDRadio logo. I don't think HDRadio has a future. This makes me even less optimistic about ATSC 3 Radio broadcasts.
