Problem with sound

Post by dag55 »

I just installed the HD Homerun Flex. I run the app through a Roku Express. I am able to get video however no sound. The Roku Express is connected to my Panasonic plasma TV via HDMI. I get sound from all other apps. What do I need to do to get sound on the TV

It would be helpful to know the numeric model number of the Roku and the age of TV.

Sound from the HDHomerun app might not be possible with certain combinations of Rokus and old TV hardware. The TV needs to support AC3 / Dolby Digital over HDMI or the streaming device needs to be able to convert the audio to PCM over HDMI. The other apps you reference probably use the latter.

You can try the No Audio troubleshooting steps here, if you can find those settings. They worked on my 2011 Samsung but not on my 2007 Panasonic. My solution for the Panasonic was to use an Onn Google TV streaming box found at Walmart. Guess it converts to PCM over HDMI.

Please clarify your no sound issue. Are you stating you have no AC3 sound tuning in ATSC 1.0 channels on your Roku or no AC4 sound tuning into ATSC 3.0 channels or both.
Ruku does not support AC4 audio. You need to use a device that has the Dolby AC 4 codeç like the Walmart ONN pro 4K or the transcode function provided by SD that will convert AC4 to AC3.
If it is will both ATSC 1.0&3.0 then there may be an issue with Ruku or the age of your Ruku and installed codecs.

Through working with various customers, we are also seeing the occasional situation where the Roku settings are correct, and the TV can receive AC-3 over HDMI, but the TV's audio settings might also need to be adjusted. A few people had success just doing a factory reset on the TV's settings (not the Roku's settings), but we are trying to see if we can figure out which specific setting might have been changed, or whatever it is that happened.

If it's a plasma TV it's probably quite old. Many TVs from before 2010 and some from 2010 to about 2014 did not support decoding DD audio when coming in from the HDMI port, either only if it comes from the TV's built in tuner, or just not at all if it's old enough to predate the ATSC tuner mandate. For those TVs, the options are either switching to a Roku Ultra (non-LT, just plain Ultra) 2020/2022/2024 model that can decode the audio, switching to any other supported device (onn Google TV box, Fire TV Stick 4K Plus/Max, Apple TV, etc.) which will decode the audio, or inserting a soundbar or surround sound system that supports DD audio and has at least 1 HDMI input and 1 HDMI output in between the Roku and the TV, and then that will decode and play the audio while passing the video to the TV (somewhat hard to find soundbars with multiple HDMI ports these days though since most are designed to work via ARC/eARC, and that usually does not work with DD audio if the TV doesn't support it to begin with).
