“This app is configured for surround sound. Use your TV’s remote to adjust the volume” nag. Again

Post by bitemydust »

I have a Hisense mini-led FireTV. I have a Vizio soundbar hooked up via HDMI arc. When I use the TV’s remote to change the volume I get the above titled nag. Well, I am using the Tv’s remote. No matter what audio setting I set in HDHomerun flex 4k, or whether I set the TV’s audio to Dolby, PCM, Auto or passthrough, I get this nag at the bottom of the screen when I change the volume. Annoying is an understatement. I believe I’ve had this argument with you guys before and you blamed it on Android. But the fact of the matter is, in all the years I’ve used Android or FireTV, I have never, I mean NEVER, had this nag crop up on any of the apps I’ve used in my lifetime. ONLY YOURS!! Ive seen it happen on your app on Google as well. The only way I can get your app to not show this pop up is by hooking it up to optical and using IR. But why should I have to do that just for your app?

I don’t want to hear you blame this on Android because as I’ve said, your app is the only app in the world that I know of that does this. This one’s on you! Fix your code please!

Signed, Annoyed

In the HDHomeRun app settings (the gear icon in the top-right corner of the "Live/Guide/Recorded/Discover/Tasks" screen), if you change "Speaker Configuration" to "Stereo", does it still happen?

Yep. I've tried every setting configuration on both the app and my TV. If I force stop the app, clear the data and cache and start it up and leave unconfigured, it stops doing it until I change the station or play a recording. The app and the TV has the latest updates.

Is this only on ATSC 3.0 channels (100+ numbers)?

After further investigating, it is indeed only on ATSC 3.0 stations, live and recorded. To put it another way, the only time it won't pop up that notification is when I'm watching ATSC 1.0 channels and have it set to stereo. Shouldn't I be able to use passthrough? I could when using optical.

Btw, on 1.0 anything other than stereo gives me the notification pop up.

Checking, you have the Android app running on the HiSense TV and you have a sound bar connected via HDMI ARC?

We have a number of HiSense TVs... I will try to set up a similar test here on Monday.
