HDHomeRun iOS app designed for same-subnet operation only

Post by johnclaus »

After a few hours of Wireshark packet captures, firewall rule experimentation, and Avahi instance relays, I learned the HDHomeRun iOS app doesn't permit cross-subnet operations. Given the fact that most home networks (hopefully) implement network segmentation, it only seems that the HDHomeRun apps shouldn't require same-subnet operations between the app and the HDHomeRun tuner.

The HDHomeRun apps work by automatic discovery. IPv4 discovery is local subnet but with IPv6 the HDHomeRun supports site-local multicast discovery.

That seems unlikely to me. Do you have anything that supports this claim?
