Android Apps lost 60fps on certain channels

Post by BrianRVT »

I am having a very weird problem where in the last month the Android version of the app lost the ability to play 60fps on certain channels instead playing them at 30fps. I have verified this on two separate Google TVs and a Pixel phone. The Windows App can play the specific channel in 60fps. The Android app can play other channels in 60 fps, but not a couple specific ones. Any ideas? This is on a Flex Duo BTW.

When you say "lost the ability to play", what are you seeing it do?

Can you please enable "send diagnostic information" in the settings menu of the HDHomeRun app on your Google device, play a problem channel (stay on the channel for 5 minutes if you can), then reply back with the Device ID of your HDHomeRun.

Sorry, what I meant to say is it plays at 30fps not 60fps.

Device ID 1097F903

Trouble channel is 7-1

Control(good) channel is 5-1

Ah... you have a Google TV Streamer 4K. This device has a bug in its built in MPEG2 support where the codec will stall after repeated seek operations. To workaround this Google bug we tell the HDHomeRun app do software decode of MPEG2. This solves the problem but the CPU in the Google TV Streamer 4K is underpowered and can't keep up with software deinterlacing at 60fps.

Did this change recently? Why would it affect specific channels? I'm guessing it's the 1080i CBS stream.

Is there anyway to during the hardware decode back on and deal with the stall?

Forcing software decode affects all MPEG2 channels but the CPU is fast enough to software decode+deinterlace 480i to 60fps, and fast enough to software decode 720p to 60fps. It is only 1080i that it can't do.
