SiliconDust - ATSC 3.0

Post by vince94 »

Greetings Nickk
I've have not used my HD HomeRun Quad tuner ever sense the stupid encrypt stations started. I really enjoyed using HD HomeRun with the Channels app. Nickk, realistically is their any chance SiliconDust will have a product anytime soon?

People have been asking this question for years, and the answer has always been "NO". It all revoves around the ability of SD's devices' users to be able to watch TV on TV sets, computers, tablets, phones, and whatever devices within their own homes, an ability that has been available since broadcast TV began ages ago, but the TV stations no longer want to allow. TV station ownership groups want to be paid for each and every device that is allowed to display a signal, something totally new and totally different from the "free over the air" system the US has had since the beginning of broadcasting. I applaud SD for taking this stand, but years have passed since they took this stand, and it will probably be many more before, and if, anything changes.

I as well no longer use my HD HomeRun tuner for anything. There is only one unenctypted TV station in the Oklahoma City market, the Fox station, and for that matter, none of the TV station signals are receivable at my location any more with any sort of reliability. They used to be, but no longer are, and this has left a huge portion of the state of Oklahoma with no off-air TV signals at all any more, of any kind, enctypted or unencrypted, even the ATSC1 signals are no longer receivable across a huge section of the state as coverage areas were shrunk by half in the digital transition.

So we are required to subscribe to some sort of subscription service to receive a signal, whether that be a satellite or streaming service. So the broadcasters get paid, just like they wanted all along. Cut the service area so that viewers MUST pay a fee to watch their signals. And in a state such as Oklahoma with our wild weather swings and constant tornado risk, having access to the weather reports is an absolute must. I don't see this current situation changing, ever.

The Z Box works only on ONE set. The HDHomeRun allows you to watch TV on a main set in the living room, a small set in the kitchen, sets in bedrooms, on your phone, and on an iPad AT THE SAME TIME if you want. And different channels on each device if you want. Ultimate freedom, just like we have had since TV broadcasting began. When I was little, my dad put up an antenna and then ran one lead wire to the console TV in the living room, and one lead to the portable TV on the kitchen counter. Two sets connected to the same antenna, what a concept!

This would not be possible today, the TV stations and broadcast groups would never allow this. The TV stations and broadcast groups do not want to allow this at all, they want to be paid a separate fee for each and every set or device that is watching a signal. They will reach this goal eventually, but will destroy themselves in the process, mark my words. They have already begun the destructive process by reducing the reach of their broadcast signal to only a small portion of the size it used to be, disenfranchising all the suburban and rural viewers they used to have. Those viewers now have to pay to get TV station signals through streaming or satellite services. Pay to Watch is now the rule rather than the exception. This genie will never be put back in the bottle, the damage has already been done.
