HDHOMERUN stopped working on Win11 HTPC

Post by legierk »

To summarize, it is working on every device I have except one, which is my main HTPC. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app a few times. It goes through the splash screen and just stops. It is working on all other devices in the house. I have rebooted the the HDHomeRun. Rebooted switch and router. Rescanned channels. Not sure what is happening. It is the only PC where it isn't working and frankly its the one where I need it to work. No other devices are using the tuners when I attempt to use it btw. I have even tried the "Repair" feature in the software. Didn't help. Would Windows firewall have blocked it? Should I delete the install folder and try to reinstall after a restart? Again (I think this is important), it is working fine on every other device I have tried. Only this one PC is having an issue, out of the blue. Any advice would be appreciated.

Simple thing first - uninstall the HDHomeRun app, then go to the Microsoft Store and install it again from there.

If that doesn't solve the problem I will help.

Thank you Nick. I unistalled BOTH. Turns out I had the Microsoft Store app AND the Windows Desktop app installed. Restarted PC. Ran a disk cleanup with Microsoft PC Manager. Installed app from Microsoft Store. App opened fine. Went straight to GUIDE. I hit the gear to check settings (all at default) and rescanned channels just to be sure. Everything good so far. Went back to the GUIDE and clicked on a show, and ....just a black screen. Waited about 2 minutes, nothing. Totally weird. I also have HDHomeRun associated with my Emby app, and it did not work in there either. Said something like Unable to start (or find) shared component with a pathway listed. Not sure if the Emby app would affect it though, as HDHomeRun works as usual on other Emby apps on TVs.

PS. I am beginning to think this might be an issue with my Mesh node or switch that is feeding the PC and the HDHomeRun. IDK. I have restarted both just in case one my not be picking up the DHCP correctly. I do not have any static IP addresses assigned, unless a ghost assigned one somehow.

We would like to get some diagnostic data to see what is happening:
  1. In a web browser go to http://hdhomerun.local
NOTE: That address will go do the first HDHomeRun device found on your network. If you have more than one HDHomeRun device, use the "device ID" printed on the bottom of the unit instead of "hdhomerun" in the address. For example, if your device ID was 104FFFFF then you would go to http://104fffff.local
  2. If it tells you that a firmware update is available, please install it
  3. Click "System Menu"
  4. Check the "Send diagnostic information" box (if this box is already checked, please un-check then re-check it)
  5. Go back one page
  6. Click "Channel Lineup"
  7. Click on "Detect Channels"
  8. After the scan finishes, open the HDHomeRun app
  9. Go into the app settings: the gear icon in the top right corner of the "Live/Recorded/Discover/Tasks" page
  10. Enable the option to "Send diagnostic information"
  11. Try to watch something
Reply back and provide us the device ID of your HDHomeRun and we will check the logs. You can find the device ID on a label on the bottom of the HDHomeRun itself.

Thank you for the thorough explanation. My device ID is 1043AD65

Still not working. Sound works on splash screen (Grok asked me if the sound was working). After splash screen no sound or video, just black.

The HDHomeRun app is trying to play live TV and Windows is returning a MF_MEDIA_ENGINE_ERR_SRC_NOT_SUPPORTED error.

Things to try in this order...

1) This could be caused by a video driver problem... can you please install the latest video driver from the Nvidia website.

2) Open the Microsoft Store app in Windows and check you have the "MPEG-2 Video Extension" app installed.

3) The black screen is live TV - press escape to exit out to the main menu, go into Settings, and set the Speaker Configuration to Stereo (if you have 2 speakers) or 5.1 (if you have 5.1 speakers) rather than passthrough.

OK. What the problem with the video was that I had disabled the AMD iGPU awhile back (as I am using the Nvidia RTX 4070 for HDMI output to the Denon AVR X3800H). Between your advice and Grok, I re-enabled the iGPU and set the sound on the HDHomeRun to stereo. Sound and video worked! HOWEVER, switching the sound back to Passthrough left me back with no video or sound. It used to work in passthrough. I reseated the HDMI cables, disabled ARC/eARC and HDCP in the AVR, still no passthrough. I swapped HDMI cables (although the one on there is certified 48Gb). Other AVR inputs passthrough bitstream with no issue as does MPC-HC, VLC on the PC in question. I have a 7.4.4 Atmos setup. Stumped. It is working with the sound on the HDHomeRun set to 7.1, so I guess that is fine for now. Still, "it used to work".
