WCCO rebroadcast of 10 pm local news

Post by tlunde »

Device ID is 10A3250A
Minneapolis, MN
4.1
WCCO

The “WCCO News at 10 pm” is broadcast a second time about 2 1/2 hours after the original broadcast. I would prefer that the HD Homerun DVR only record the first of the two showings. I wonder if the re-broadcast being after midnight (I.e. after the date change) is confusing things.

Thanks
Thomas

Typically news programs don't get episode numbers and the way they record is by being marked by the guide provider as "new" as "new" episodes always record to allow re-recording of an episode you already recorded, such as if an episode gets pushed back a week but the same feature works for news as you wouldn't be able to record another unless you always deleted and told to re-record prior to the next days airing. (Note this is the typical way news is listed with the original episode many years ago when it started with that name, I didn't have time to check if gracenote actually listed wcco news at 10 this way)

It is quite possible that the guide provider mismarked this and SD can reach out to get it corrected but from what I recall, typically in winter, the station sometimes has an updated weather forecast such as current conditions and ticker thus asks for it to be marked as new which might not allow such change be made

As far as the date change possibly confusing things, I would only be worried about that if it was not recording the 10pm airing as that would suggest they are marking the first episode of the day as the new one. Also keep in mind that guide is based on utc so both technically are on the next day.

Hopefully it is just mismarked and SD can get the guide provider to fix it.

There appears to be a typo in that device ID. Please double check.

I am not seeing a NEW flag set on the 12:37am airings of WCCO News at 10pm. Are you watching and deleting the 10pm airing before the repeat starts?

I was thinking that wouldn't make a difference unless new but then I realized if all episodes are deleted it would record when aired again as you do not (currently) have a recording yet. I believe one can set the rule to current season (I still prefer the old term used of recent as it was a more accurate description of what it does) and because the 10pm episode is marked as new it should still record but the 12:37 won't as the original airing would be from august 2005 which is far more than 90 days ago.

No, not watching and deleting. Sometimes watching, sometimes not, but the behavior is the same.

Here's last night's activity on this tuner and one other tuner:
20260219-03:59:31 Tuner: tuner1 tuning 4.1 WCCO-DT (8vsb:581MHz-1)
20260219-03:59:31 Tuner: tuner1 streaming to local storage
20260219-04:34:31 Tuner: tuner2 tuning 11.1 KARE-HD (8vsb:575MHz-3)
20260219-04:34:31 Tuner: tuner2 streaming to local storage
20260219-04:41:09 System: ip address obtained: [fdf9:5f2:d7a6:73a:218:ddff:fe0a:3250]/64
20260219-05:37:30 Tuner: tuner1 stream ended
20260219-06:00:30 Tuner: tuner2 stream ended
20260219-06:36:30 Tuner: tuner3 tuning 4.1 WCCO-DT (8vsb:581MHz-1)
20260219-06:36:30 Tuner: tuner3 streaming to local storage
20260219-07:09:30 Tuner: tuner3 stream ended

We record the 10 p.m. news and also the program that follows, which is why tuner1 starts at 29 seconds before 10 p.m. local time and ends streaming to local storage 98 minutes later.

For the rebroadcast at 12:37 a.m. local time, it uses tuner3 rather than tuner1 but you can see the 33 minute capture.

Change your recording task from "Record All Seasons" to "Record Current Season".

Thank you. That looks promising. I deleted all previous episodes, choosing the option to allow rerecording. After making the change to Record Current Season on the task and saving, I scrolled ahead to the guide data for next week and do not see the red dot on the rebroadcast after midnight. As the weekends are different, I won't know for sure until next week. I appreciate the help.
