Live TV freezes when in background or minimized while using the hdhr app on Windows 11

Post by Mx1CjAjK »

If I minimize or put the app in the background the stream freezes after about 30 seconds. I tried reinstalling the app but that didn't make a difference. Any help is appreciated.

Windows 11 Pro
HDHomeRun 1.0.49238.0
Model: HDFX-2US
FW: 20250815

This is a Windows OS "feature" - Windows backgrounds UWP apps when minimized or when it thinks they are not visible to the user, similar to Android.

I just noticed this today also. Can this be overridden so that the PC will continue on and audio can be listened to?

It's a Windows limitation for UWP apps, so not without making a non-UWP version of the app.

If you're just looking to have something on for background noise, you might be better off just using VLC or another 'regular' app that would not be treated like this. Microsoft likes to pretend that UWP (Windows Store) apps are like phone apps and can be suspended and resumed without any negative impact, which is great if it's Notepad and it no longer blocks you from rebooting your PC if you have unsaved files open, but super annoying when it's a media app and it gets suspended in the middle of playback because Windows isn't as smart about it as Android or iOS. In theory, you can go into Settings > Apps > Installed apps > ... next to HDHomeRun > Advanced options and set Let this app run in the background to Always, and that is supposed to prevent it from being suspended, but that setting has not worked reliably for me in the past, so YMMV.
