Channel Issues... but not all? - paulbates

Post by paulbates »

Relatively new user of a HDFX 4K. Spent time in the forums and asked question about antennas (got good answers). I wanted to receive a local station here in Detroit to watch NFL when they have it. After trying a new antenna, worked great.

A few days ago, around the time of a snow storm, I got a black screen and "No Video Data" ... different than encrypted messages I got from 3.0 channels. The channel in question is 2.1, and when I looked around all of, and only, the 2.x channels gave the same message. When I rescanned all of, and only, the 7 2.x channels disappeared. Previously, the 2.x I watched had good signal and high symbols. The snow was only that one day but its remained cloudy.

I'm guessing it's weather related? Any explanation or suggestions.. guess I'll try moving the antenna.

We would like to get some diagnostic data:
  1. Please go to http://hdhomerun.local
  2. If it tells you that a firmware update is available, please install it
  3. Click System Status
  4. Check the Send diagnostic information box
  5. Go back one page
  6. Click Channel Lineup
  7. Click on Detect Channels

Reply back to this post and provide us the device ID of your HDHomeRun and we will check the logs. You can find the device ID on a label on the bottom of the HDHomeRun itself.

Looks like it came back on the most recent scan, but the signal quality is very low. What antenna and location? WJBK is always the most difficult of the major Detroit stations to receive because it is on VHF while everything else is UHF.

Yeh it did in that last scan, right about the time the weather cleared. That seems to be part of it, it started right after it clouded up and cleared after the sky cleared up. There was another post from a Detroit user that listed an antenna you recommended. It looks l Iike an outdoor antenna and that will have wait until next spring when it warms up. I've been moving the Mohu Leaf VHF/UHF panel antenna around the nearest window, but its first floor.

I'm having to rediscover my "sea legs" with VHF.

Thank you for looking, its appreciated

Several of the recent posts related to WJBK have been people who were in areas blocked by terrain and required more than just basic VHF capabilities. Judging by your UHF numbers, you're probably in better shape than them. You might look at the Antennas Direct VHF kit, https://store.antennasdirect.com/antenn ... black.html . You can plug your existing UHF antenna into it then run another coax cable to the HDHomeRun. Figure out some way to mount it (hooks and fishing line, velcro tape, etc.), and it will give you much better VHF performance than you have now.
