High-Split Converter Question

Post by KeithAbbott »

I recently received my HSC devices, which will replace my TAs next month when Spectrum completes their work. My understanding is that the HSC box converts channels transmitted at frequencies currently outside of the frequencies that traditional cable cards/tuners can receive: the HSC then converts those signals to frequencies that the cable cards/tuners can process. Somewhere in the mix there is also SDV occurring.

This seems quite a bit different than the role of TAs has been, since there will be active, real-time conversion happening in HSCs (I think). Right now, I have two HDHomeRun Primes each with their own TA, for a total of six simultaneous cable channels. When I connect up my two new HSC devices to my Primes, can each HSC handle three tuners?

Traditionally a cablecard and ta require oob to be between around 70-130Mhz... with high split, they will be using up to 204Mhz for internet upstream so there won't be an oob for the cablecard to get anything to work.

The HSC provides an oob the cablecard can use it has nothing to do with channels (unless you consider oob a channel)

The frequencies for the tv channels will be in the same range (just now all will be above 210 MHz up to the 1 GHz).

Thank you, that helps clarify things a bit, although I did have to do a bit of googling as well. So the SDV portion of the HSC device works pretty much identical to SDV in a TA; the additional functionality included in the HSC is to handle the signalling (at a higher frequency than the past) between the cable provider and my cable tuner. So it sounds like all three tuners should continue to work just fine with a HSC device attached. For a minute there, I was worried that Spectrum would be losing some of my business...

I recently replaced my 2 TAs with HSCs on Spectrum as well. They have been working identically to the way the TAs worked. The only downside I've experienced is that the HSCs take FOREVER (5 to 10 seconds) to change channels.
