having issue with my HDHomerun again..

Post by Fin74501 »

So everything was working ok and it seemed to be, but I'm now having rain fade during heavy storms.

Now sure if this is unavoidable.

Would just like help to see if there is anything I can do.

thanks.

here is my rabbit ears https://www.rabbitears.info/s/2068161

KSAT was the one I was trying to watch during the storm.

Speaking ATSC 1.0 here, KSAT is broadcast on KLRN's RF9 signal. Do you have an antenna suitable for high-VHF channels?

I live in the same general area. Looking at the Rabbit Ears info KSAT (virtual channel 12.1) seems to be broadcast both on KLRN's transmitter (189MHz) and on their own transmitter (207MHz), both of which are VHF. What's also of note is that both transmitters are in the same general direction with KLRN's at 117.4° (28 miles away) and KSAT's at 118.8° (35 miles away). I would guess he's receiving via the 189MHz transmitter. Is it is possible to have both transmitters listed available? If so, perhaps try disabling the 207MHz one in the list of channels.

The 207 MHz (RF12) signal is ASTC 3.0 and KSAT (112.1) is DRM encrypted there according to rabbitears, so it's not in play.

That antenna should be okay. Mounting it outside, if not already, would be best as building materials can degrade the signal. And weather affects antenna reception - no way around that fact of life.

Best I can suggest is to maximize the signal quality and strength on RF9 with antenna adjustments. The hdhomerun_config_gui program found in the HDHomeRun Software for Windows bundle in the Downloads section is useful to help with that.

That's what I thought I was doing when I had an installer here last time and my Signal Strength, Signal Quality and Symbol Quality were all at 100% for that channel. it's maddening lol

With all the storms in SA over the last week could it have moved the antenna?

I don't think so because this isn't a recent issue, but it still could be water ingress. not sure.

Water ingress primarily causes attenuation above about 500MHz. Stations on higher frequencies (NBC, CBS, Fox, 31.x, and 10.x) would be the most likely to be affected.

Is your antenna outdoors? How high up? Keep in mind from the RabbitEars report, specifically the terrain map for KLRN (when you click on the 28.1) that the reception path is coming very close to the ground about a mile from you, which looks to be about where that apartment complex is at Culebra and Alamo. A bunch of 3 story buildings on top of a high point might be enough to knock out line of sight for KLRN/KSAT, so you could be getting a diffracted signal, and that will have hot and cold spots. Getting the antenna up higher is almost always going to help, and moving side to side may also help, although that isn't always an option on an outdoor install if you're using a chimney mount or something like that.

My Antenna is outside on a two story house on the roof, not on a chimney mount or anything like that. if it's not water ingress, not sure what's causing the rain fade and signal loss. I've also lost channels from 2.1-2.5(2‑1 (8))

2.x is always a problem. They have a couple transmitters and none of them are great. The main one serving San Antonio is basically due south of you off I-35 near Lytle, and the combination of a weak signal, short tower, and the antenna not being pointed at it would make it difficult to receive.

Can you switch the signal source dropdown to cable, run a channel scan, switch it back to antenna, and then run another scan? The cable scan looks a lot of additional frequencies and may help identify something else, such as an excessively strong FM radio signal that might be interfering.

Sure, am I looking for anything in particular when I do the cable scan?

My QUATRO didn't find anything when doing a cable scan, but my FLEX 4K did report this https://imgur.com/c03fGRj

It looks like there is a tower with like a dozen FM radio stations pretty close to you, near the Walmart on FM1560, and those signals are coming in extremely strong, so that may be causing some interference. Adding an FM filter like https://www.channelmaster.com/products/fm-filter will knock down those FM radio signals and can help improve the TV signals. Note that if you go looking for one on Amazon you will see a lot that look like they might work, but if you look closely at the connector it will be the wrong size and the threads won't look the same as a normal F connector. Those are for amateur radio setups and will not work.

Before you have suggested LTE filter the last time we talked, so I have the SiliconDust LPF-608M LTE Filter, should I use the one you linked instead or can I use both or just FM filter?

Try with both and see what happens.
