Need to fix discover's showing last recorded episode instead of currently playing episode

Post by Bobstr »

I noticed this on family guy, but every time that I am in the discover screen and I click on the family guy tv show, the episode i see listed is the last episode it recorded, *not* the episode currently being broadcast. To find the episode that is currently being broadcast, i have to down arrow and go to upcoming to find the description of the episode currently being broadcast. This is not convienient

I'd bet that based on the behavior, it happens on all shows, not just family guy.

The preferred behavior would be to have the episode that is currently being aired would show in this screen (or sometimes the episodes on multiple channels as some popular shows are aired on multiple channels at the same time)

I need to think this one through...

If the show being broadcast is being recorded it will be the default item so it is already doing what you want.

If the show is not being recorded...
A) You already have the recording.
B) The episode has previously been recorded and deleted.
C) The most recently recorded is unwatched and there is no matching recording rule to record the currently live episode (doesn't match the rule options or the rule has been deleted).

A is most likely. No point watching live and missing the start when you already have the recording you can watch.
B and C are situations where you have indicated you are not interested in the episode, B because you deleted the recording, C because you deleted the rule or configured the rule filters to avoid it.

Thanks for the quick and detailed response.

The point i was making is that for me, there are three major use cases for the discover screen.

1- to find shows/ episodes to manually set to record (some shows are set to record only the current season, but i may want to manually set a single episode to record for some show that is not set to record at all, or to find and set up recording for a future airing of an episode currently being aired so that I don't miss any of it)

2- to purposefully watch live tv regardless of whether I have watched the latest recorded episode of a show (in the family guy case, I already have) and regardless of whether the episode or movie is partially aired already, and I want to start watching it already while it's already in progress.

3- to set a show or movie to record while configuring it for all seasons, current season, etc.

All of these scenarios were easily accomplished in the old UI. The addition of upcoming and recent has helped the new UI to become easier to do these.

It's seems that the model seems to have shifted to a more 'recording' centric one - where watching live tv is not considered as important a feature as the watching of recordings (aka a lot like the streaming services) model for recordings.

I think the use case of watching live TV is as important as the streaming/viewing recordings, and i don't think I'm in a minority of users in that respect.

Being able to easily watch live tv and find the show and episodes currently being broadcast is important to my (and other users) viewing habits, and unfortunately the current configuration makes it difficult to do so for shows that I have recordings of.

It sounds like this is covered by the Upcoming selection. Selecting Upcoming results in a list that matches the old UI.

A less knowledgeable user may never figure out that 'the episode currently being broadcast' is hiding in 'upcoming' and may assume that 'upcoming' means 'to be broadcast in the future' rather than it's current meaning of 'both currently being broadcast and future broadcasts'

'Upcoming' does cover it, but having to click multiple times to get to the upcoming screen is not intuitive and becomes painful - particularly when I encounter the ff pressed twice problem that causes playback to jump to the end of a recording that I've reported separately.

Having to get down to upcoming to restart the episode over and over when that bug exhibits itself is downright hellishly painful. Particularly when I try to ff to the part of the episode I was at when I encountered the ff bug. If I accidentally press the second time too soon, bang - i gotta start it all over again and navigate to upcoming (or recent) , select the episode, start ff'ing again.. lather, rinse and repeat if I'm too quickly ff again...

(BTW- I can reproduce that ff issue in live tv as well - if I'm rewound and watching any amount of delay, and hit ff a second time when the first isn't finished, it jumps to live after a momentary screen pause hesitation and loses the buffer so I can't rewind it backwards at alll, thereby losing the part of the live tv episode that was in the buffer).

That is a bug - it is meant to put you back in episodes view in the same place. We will get that fixed.

Thanks! That will be very helpful.

After my last post, I got to thinking more about this, and to help clarify my request, I think it would be a good idea to have a set of two different behaviors when looking up a tv show.

In discover, have it go straight to the upcoming screen when selecting a show or movie, showing what is currently being broadcast and having the option to go to recent, upcoming, etc. as it exists today

In recorded, have the behavior take you instead to recent, with the same option to go to upcoming, recent, etc as it exists today

Thanks for listening to my suggestions. All are meant to help move the product forward from a user's perspective and are not meant to be rants or anything negative. I greatly appreciate the time you've allowed me.
