I have the HD HomeRun app on a Sony Google TV that just stopped working with HDCP channels.
Probably in the last 2 or 3 weeks I would get an issue where when I started the HDHomeRun app I would have a blank screen. (my default channel would be an HBO or some other premium channel that has HDCP). To fix this, I would restart my TV from the system menu and things would work again.
Well, today I am having an issue now where I get the message "Unable to play channel: Content protection error Content Protection Required.
I have verified that my cable card system from Spectrum is working correctly. The HDHomeRun app on my iPhone is working with HDCP channels. Also, I have a Tivo and that is working with my cable card system.
It's only this Sony Google TV that is giving me a hard time.
Normal unprotected channels are working just nothing that is encrypted.
I have uninstalled the app and reinstalled it on the google tv.
My TV software is up to date.
I have power cycled the HDHomeRun device as well.
Does anyone know if maybe there is some update to either the app or the Google TV platform that could be creating this situation and what I should do?
Thanks!
HDCP on Google TV not working all of a sudden
Re: HDCP on Google TV not working all of a sudden
Just realized that the HDHomeRun app says version 20242016 (App) / 20250322h (UI) (beta) so obviously the HDHomeRun app updated and is causing this issue.
I have enabled the diagnostic menu now and my device ID is 1326C917
Thanks!

There is a known issue with Android devices right now where DRM channels will stop working. It is being worked on.

Any updates on the protected channels not working properly? This issue has become more frequent over the past months and it's quite a nuissance.

There will be an update when such gets fixed not a moment before.
Re: HDCP on Google TV not working all of a sudden
The last time this happened it fixed itself after a week, but I have a feeling it's not going to happen this time. The windows app is still working though.

Are you able to share what the known issue is for a semi-technical perspective? I'm curious as to what the breakdown is. Whether it was some encoding certificate expired, or an updated module for encrypting the channel changed and it has to be fixed either by Google or HDHomeRun? I'm not intending to cast blame by any means but it's fascinating to me what happens 'behind the scenes' with these software's and I would love to know more about it if you are able to share.
Thanks!

Re: HDCP on Google TV not working all of a sudden
Though they have not stated if it is the same issue as before (before it was that google shut off a reqired api, then turned it back on before they finished a workaround so my guess they didnt finish that then since they no longer needed to) they have stated:
Typically once installed, it has to renew in a year from that date and is why things get staggered and not affecting all devices at the same time as they haven't hit their full year yet when such update becomes required and can't be fulfilled. In theory there could be some devices that will continue to work for nearly another year.
see viewtopic.php?p=403385#p403385The problem is not a cert expiring. The problem is the validation of the Android system that needs to happen when renewing the certificate.

I canceled my XFINITY Service lack of DRM support here it no longer justifies the high Cable Prices.
