Flex 4K One Channel

Post by Max Jr »

I had just gotten a Flex 4K in the mail today to replace a failed Prime tuner. I'm hardly recording from any of the extra stations Mediacom offers, plus new Prime units seem to be made of unobtanium currently.
For whatever strange reason I am only able to pick up one station when tuning to cable: the Emergency Alert System. And no, there aren't any active alerts as of the writing of this post.
I've attempted to flash the firmware manually, but nothing seems to be working on that end. Any possible advice as to whether or not I wasted money on a possible paperweight?

Trying a different port on the distribution amp allowed me 5 additional channels, but not much else has progressed on this.

The Flex 4K can only tune clear QAM from a cable. I am not familiar with Mediacom but these days it is highly unlikely they, or any cable provider, have any (except emergency ) channels in the clear all others would require a cablecard and a device like a Prime that can decrypt encrypted cable channels.

As it is currently I can tune into six QAM channels as of this moment, one of them still being the EAS. I'm beginning to think the cable amp I have is going bad though. I won't be able to diagnose this further until sometime Wednesday due to time constraints.

For about a year mediacom has been phasing out qam and replacing with iptv which none of the tuners can work with. My understanding clear qam was the first to go as it wasn't utilizing h.264 so was a big waste of spectrum. IF your provider still supports encrypted qam (and that is on the way out as well with mediacom) you will need a prime with cablecard to get just about anything other than the eas. But as I mentioned that is also going away to iptv boxes.

You will probably have a better idea of signal levels if you do such diagnosis on the prime otherwise it may just be percentages

Them phasing-out QAM is not the least bit surprising. Worst case I can finally get to setting up an antenna for the property as a proper backup in case of any further funny business.

If you turn on the Send diagnostic information option, run a channel scan, and reply back with the device ID, we can check to see if it's a signal issue or if there just aren't any other clear QAM channels.

No sense in having this thing plugged-in. Mediacom isn't broadcasting QAM channels anymore and are strictly IPTV. If I'm to use this I'll need to set up a separate antenna to capture OTA channels.
I hate cable companies.
