USB Drive Suggestion

Post by jph1589 »

I am thinking about a Flex Quatro with a USB drive to replace my Duo and Servio. i run the Hdhomerun App on my iMac and iPad and iPhone.

Can someone recommend a USB drive that will work well in this situation.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

Just about any modern USB external will work. Just matters what size you want and for what price.
I've even hooked up a spare laptop HDD in a Vantec enclosure

and it worked perfect.

Just realize whatever you do use for it will be formatted xfs so for most that may mean dedicated to the flex not something to move between systems. I agree just about anything will work but some drives will need external power (generally 3.5 in drives) and that most flash sticks probably are not a good idea because of live buffer (most ssd's will work fine in usb enclosure but I do prefer mechanical). Also i believe there is currently an 18TB max restriction as to what it will use.

I think I would want to stick with a name brand like WD, Seagate, or Toshiba for mechanical drives.

The limit on a FLEX is 17.59TB (2^32 4kB blocks). This is unlikely to change due to how CPUs process data at the lowest levels. Besides, if you need more than 18TB of recordings, TV is obviously important to you, and having it on a NAS with some redundancy in case of a disk failure is probably a good idea.

I think I like the Samsung 1TB T9 SSD. I'm not a heavy user, so this should be adequate.

"The USB port will support 5 volts up to 1.8 amps of power, which should be enough for most bus-powered USB hard drives."

Max is 1A unless you upgrade the power adapter.

Or use a powered 3.5" USB hard drive enclosure - that way you can go bigger (max 18TB).

OK, I guess that means the info.hdhomerun site is wrong.
