Boston Market no audio with the AC3 on Roku Ultra

Post by hfguzman »

I am not able to receive any audio on my Roku Ultra. Error message states "This Roku device dose not support AC3 Audio required to play this channel/recording. Roku devices such as Roku Ultra support AC3 audio" The thing is that this error is on a Roku Ultra which the error seems to state that AC3 audio is supported.

What exact model of Roku Ultra?

The very very early Ultra that pre-dates the 4800X (which is pretty old now) doesn't decode AC3 and requires that you use a TV/AVR with AC3 support.
The cheap Ultra LT model from Walmart doesn't decode AC3 and requires that you use a TV/AVR with AC3 support.

Most TVs support AC3 via HDMI so most people get AC3 audio even when using these models.

If the Roku model doesn't support AC3 decoding AND the TV doesn't support AC3 via HDMI you won't get audio and the latest HDHomeRun app will pop up a message.

Can we have you open any other Roku app, press the "*" button, and change "Volume mode" to "off"? It might also be called "Volume leveling".

Hello,

I hope it is okay to piggyback off this thread as I am having a similar issue with my HDHomeRun FLEX 4K and a newly acquired Roku Streambar SE. There is no audio from all stations, including AC3 and AC4 audio formats. The Roku Streambar SE is model number 9104R.

The issue with the suggestions within this thread is that the Roku Streambar SE has limited audio settings since it is the device that reproduces the audio. I verified that all sound features are turned off, such as volume leveling and any other dynamic audio features.

Thanks,
Joe

SE in the electronics world has always been dubbed Sucky Edition so it would not surprise me one bit if it can't decode ac3

Also according to rtings.com "The Roku Streambar SE only supports playback via PCM 2.0. It doesn't support any surround sound formats"

I don't want to hi-jack this thread but I'm also in the Boston Market and my scan displays 66 channels and none of them report as ATSC 3.0 within the Channel Lineup. Is this the case for you as well hfguzman?

Where are you located? Boston's ATSC 3.0 stations are on WUNI's UHF 27 signal which transmits from a tower in Hudson

You're not missing much though, everything except 102.1 WGBH and 150.1 WWJE (True Crime Network) have DRM protection.

Rochester. Surprisingly with a Televes antenna in the attic most of my channels fall within 100% to 70% (25.1 and 5.1). I'm guessing those stations are even further north beyond my reach.

It's about 15 miles WNW of the main broadcast towers, so the coverage only gets about as far as Brockton and Taunton.

I know this thread is a year old but the "AC3" problem just cropped up for me also on a Roku Ultra. Thank you to NedS, press the "*" button, and change "Volume mode" to "off" worked for me!
