DVR Hard Drive Waking Up
DVR Hard Drive Waking Up
I can currently running my DVR engine on a Windows machine with a 2 TB internal mechanical drive. It is somewhat near me and I notice the drive quite often will wake up and I can hear the spin up and then it goes back to sleep. Good that the drive is smart enough to not just run all the time, but is there way to stop the drive from doing this and just waking when it's time to record?

It is never supposed to spin down when using the HDHomeRun DVR so they write to the log every 2 minutes. Too often errors happen when it needs to wait to spin up.

So, you are saying that not only will the drive never stay mostly quiet, mine is actually (too smart) not performing ideally by putting itself to sleep. I guess there are HHD's more suited for the optimal performance I think you are referring to. Of course a NVME drive would do away with the spin up noise in my case and the constant noise of a drive that never sleeps in the ideal setup you refer to as normal operation.
I cannot remember if this drive runs continuously when externally connected to my Flex Duo, because I have always kept the enclosure at the end of an extension in a place I can't hear it. It might do the same cycling.

So, I'm playing with my setup again, because of course it's entertaining and I'm getting errors. I solved the problem I hadn't realized was a problem until I got the answer that pointed out a drive should never sleep, not sleep more to be less annoying. I set up the mini with 2 TB drive as the D drive again, only to have it sleep and fail to record the morning news shows that were running as I did the setup. I fixed this by moving the 2TB HDD to the C drive, which means it's a slow computer, but it's dedicated to handling the HDH DVR and that's about all. I installed a really bare bones instance of win/10 and installed nothing. I didn't even install Chrome. Once booted (that was like booting in 2000) it seems to be OK and doing the job. My silent, fanless mini is a bit noisier, so I might spring for a new SSD.
