TECH5-4K8-2X4

Post by dwstudeman »

I realize that this is a commercial product but has any consideration for DRM decryption been considered for this device? So far, everything in these forums has only been for consumer products. I have run my MythTV backend for years with two Hauppauge Quad tuner cards and am used to having eight tuners available.

The other strong draw to me is the form factor, front panel display, utilities built into this device, and the fact that it doesn't use a Wall Wart power supply. I've grown weary of tiny little featherweight boxes that need a Wall Wart and can be whipped all over the place by coax tension. My Apple TV 4K with ethernet at least has a built-in power supply for some heft and no coax to fight it.

Fundamentally it operates the same way as the consumer version, in that it relays the raw data to the network. Decrypting would be done on the player/app/client side, not the tuner side.

Thank you. Since these convert ATSC 3.0 to a TS stream there is no problem with other devices. I have a quad that I have tested on my MythTV backend. It works very well. The only thing it will not do that my PCIe cards do is record multiple programs at once off of the same tuner on the same RF channel if scheduled. I can set up the backend to go up to 10 simultaneous per tuner with the PCIe tuners but I chose 4. If one is recording from different RF channels it adds no benefit. The two quad-tuner cards are ATSC 1.0.

Will the TECH5-4K8-2X4 need a firmware upgrade before it can send encrypted streams over the network and has the A3SA given the go-ahead in this?

Thanks for your time!

DRM support will require firmware and app updates. The exact format of the data stream for DRM content is still TBD.

You can still record multiple programs from the same RF channel from ATSC 1.0 streams with the HDHR tuners, just not with their preferred HTTP API. The legacy method still works, but many DVR backends are not supporting it much anymore. (IIRC, Tvheadend still uses this method.)

I missed the legacy method apparently. Please tell more. Thanks!

I don't know about ATSC 3.0 because I don't use it, but I don't believe mythtv supports multirec on 3.0. Don't quote me on that. It (well, ffmpeg) doesn't support whatever audio format they're broadcasting anyway so it probably doesn't matter.

But for 1.0, at least with the consumer devices like my Connect Duo, multirec definitely works. With current versions, you don't even set anything up, new (virtual) tuners just appear in your configuration when needed. [I thought there was still a limit that needed to be set, but I don't see it in the new webapp setup at least].

I'd bring this up on the mythtv forum
