Firmware 20240506?

Post by BrianTheSane »

I purchased an HDHomeRun Flex 4k from Amazon on Dec 6. This was purchased from the same product page as the Flex I bought a year ago. The Firmware will not update with the hdhomerun.local page displaying "Firmware: 20240506". My old Flex was correctly updated to Firmware: 20231214.

Is this a counterfeit unit? It seems odd that the firmware version is higher than SiliconDust latest release.

One of the issues I experienced was the AC3 audio error message with no sound on a ROKU. This error does not happen with the older Flex.

Firmware numbers look like they decode to year month day.
20240506 June 6 2024.
20231214 December 14 2023.

So, if the naming scheme is valid, last December was the last downloadable release. Maybe the firmware on the unit I got is newer and not available for download?

Thinking this unit was returned to Amazon by someone who had installed beta firmware.

I have seen new units have newer dates of firmware than any mentioned before. Often manufacturer's have to do things like that just for initial setup to more closely match date (sometimes just year) of manufacture.

You cannot downgrade firmware so you cannot install any until a later firmware is released.

I do not suggest using hdhomerun.local if you have more than one device as your "request" by clicking a button may actually go to a different device than the one serving the page you clicked on. I prefer ip address but you can also use the DeviceID.local (replace DeviceID with the device's DeviceID.

I do not believe your roku issue is caused by such roku as such is always a possibility of happening with most roku's and many TV's and I do know people it happens intermittently with their roku's. If you must have a roku for tv content (rather than internet content), make sure it is a recent ultra and typically with no other letters after ultra such as lt.

The firmware is solid but we do have an update in the works... improvements to MDNS compliance and better handling of failed hard drives. The firmware part of ATSC 3.0 OTT channel support should make the next release as well.

When there is a firmware update, how are we notified and what is the process for a flex 4k owner to update the firmware? I'm a new owner so please excuse this question.

The app should notify you on launch. Most here probably subscribe to the changelog thread to get notified for changes in firmware, software, and ui.

Basically the way it works is every 8 hours the device contacts SD and if there is a firmware update it finds out it is available and when the app launches and detects that device it should notify you such is outdated (typically by going to the apps devices page, I forget if it allows you to upgrade there or not).

If you go to the device's web page it will also notify you of such and allow you to update.

Many may decide to go the route of downloading the full software package (for windows, and I believe also mac in this case), as that setup will also update.. this is also the usual procedure for updating to any beta firmware.

Once we're at a point where we're reasonably sure of a timeline we'll announce one. We're not at that point yet.

I just received my 3rd replacement while under warranty and it also came with 20240506 firmware. When my previous device failed due to the usual weak tuner issue around July/August, SD mentioned they were waiting for new devices to arrive with better protection but it seems I was sent one of the "old" ones which only lasted about 5 months. Hopefully the one I just received was one of the new ones. Not sure if that's why it has the 20240506 firmware.

So it is obviously stable enough for new users so why not old? Is SD favoring new users or punishing old users.

The 20240506 update is related to manufacturing and isn't relevant to customers.

We have a new firmware update that supersedes 20240506 and 20231214. This update includes a number of MDNS compliance improvements. The holdup is an issue with the Apple package signing certificate preventing the Mac installer build from completing.

Hello,
I just purchased a "new" unit HD Flex Quatro x 4 from Amazon which included the same version of the software 20240506. I am also experiencing the No Sound issue from the Roku app. :x

I have searched and tried every single combination of audio settings described in the internet and the best I have accomplished so far is to have the Dialog box indicating that my Roku does not support AC3 disappear, yet I still end up with no sound.

I checked the Roku HD application version and mine is Version 96.0 Build 20250107 which also identifies itself as the latest and greatest.

Is this an issue with the HD device, HD application or the Roku application?

Something is getting returned soon if this is not addressed and it is not going to be the Rokus that work with every other streaming app!!

What specific model number of Roku do you have and what specific model of TV is it connected to?

The HDHomeRun does not function like streaming services. Streaming services are able to provide additional audio formats like AAC, the HDHomeRun just passes the audio and video streams as is from your OTA or cable signal. For ATSC 1.0 that usually means MPEG-2 video and AC-3 audio, many Roku models do not have a native AC-3 decoder and instead rely on HDMI passthru to decode the audio, which not all TVs support.
